Blue Plaque tribute for North Shields guitar legend Hilton Valentine, founding member of 60s group, The Animals

Blue Plaque tribute for North Shields guitar legend Hilton Valentine

A blue plaque ceremony is to be held to celebrate the life of guitar legend, Hilton Valentine, at his childhood home in North Shields.

A founding member of 60s ‘British Invasion’ group, The Animals, Hilton was best known for composing one of the most famous rock intros of all time from the band’s breakthrough hit, House of the Rising Sun, in 1964.

He was greatly admired by other rock and roll luminaries such as Bob Dylan for his distinctive playing on a string of hit records, including We Gotta Get out of This Place and Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.

Hilton and his bandmates Eric Burdon, Chas Chandler, Alan Price, and John Steel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and Hollywood’s Rock Walk of Fame in 2001.

In 2011, he returned to his musical roots and paid tribute to the street where he grew up with the album Skiffledog on Coburg Street. His last recording in 2019 was River Tyne, a sombre folk song that celebrated the river close to his boyhood home.

Hilton passed away in January 2021, aged 77.

Lack of poppy tributes at Gateshead Cenotaph, Prince Consort Rd/Durham Rd, Gateshead after Storm Arwen - pictures 07/12/21

Pictures by myself from Tuesday 07/12/21 at approx 0915 & 1030 showing views of Lack of poppy tributes at Gateshead Cenotaph, Prince Consort Rd/Durham Rd, Gateshead

As in previous years the tributes have been affected by strong wind - this year notices in place stating that they have been relocated at the James Renforth Memorial just south of entrance to the adjacent Shipley Art Gallery

Amazing that the tributes on the South Africa Memorial, Durham Rd, Low Fell, an equally windy location, remain in place

Pictures from approx 0930 show them "properly tied" rather than just relying on the plastic clip that comes with the wreath

Wonder if anyone will due their duty and fix them properly in place to the Cenotaph - did not happen in previous years

After the North Shields 'Lone Fisherman' - now plans for a 'Herring Girl' sculpture

Around £55,000 is needed to create a 'Herring Girl' statue in North Shields that would celebrate the role of women in the local fishing industry

“We now intend to get another statue in place, because the women deserve the same recognition as the men in the fishing industry. It’s a worthwhile and justifiable cause and we want as many people as possible to support our efforts.”

Ray Lonsdale, the creator of the Fiddlers Green fisherman has been commissioned to produce the life-size Herring Girl sculpture which will be located on the Western Quay as a tribute to all the women who played an important part in the North Shields fishing industry.
