-2,000 rooms, developed in two towers: The Royal Towers will consist of 1,200 rooms that will target luxury travelers and a second tower of 800 rooms aimed towards the middle market.

Will have two monorail stations in the hotel to connect it to the main stalk of the palm

The resort will have some unusual and distinctive archeological marine exhibits. The design will be based on the myth of Atlantis and will maintain the iconic design elements of the Royal Towers in Atlantis, Paradise Island, incorporating traditional Arabic design themes.

• An extensive water-theme park, which at approximately 40 acres will be the largest in the region, will feature unique water attractions, one of the world's largest marine habitats, a snorkel trail, a swim with the dolphins encounter program, an array of water slides and The Dig, an Atlantis-themed "archeological" experience. The water-theme park will have capacity for over 6,000 daily visitors.

• The expansion will also include significant facilities directed towards Dubai's strong business travel and budding convention market, including a two-story conference center wing with a total of over 86,000 square feet of function space and a main ballroom of approximately 21,000 square feet, the largest such room in Dubai outside of the Dubai Convention Center.

• The expansion includes an Entertainment Village that will feature 20,000 square feet of retail space within an 80,000 square feet area hosting restaurants and food and beverage establishments.

• Hotel and water park visitors will be transported through a monorail system, to be developed by Nakheel, which is expected to begin at the 'trunk' of The Palm, Jumeirah and will end at Atlantis, The Palm.

Nah, i don't think it'll take a whole year to get this in order. 3-4 months at the most i guess. They are pretty fast and they have proven that already. If they are really determined, they will even try for a New Year's opening!
So all that artwork in the lobby shown on post 889 is gone?
Opening Sept 24th, 2009 :)
^^I don't think it'll throw back the opening by one year, but by a few weeks at least. I have a friend from Berlin, who has booked for him and his family for november 1st. I doubt they'll be able to stay there now.

Well, they have to rebuild the whole lobby. First all the analysis and all that stuff has to happen anyway so nothing can be done there. Then they probably have to demolish the whole roof and start again. Then create the amazing interior they had before.
Of course the rest of the hotel could open soon with that section blocked off while repair works go on.
Was at the site today, was told that the interior lobby is not affected. The glass sculpture is still intact and not affected. They said that they are still on for opening september 24th. I don't see how?
The private Bridge Suite located above the hotel lobby is where the fire started and suffered extensive smoke damage. I think the lobby is not as bad. Although flames were shooting up the central palm shape from the lobby and some very expensive statues in the lobby have been lost.

Devastating Photos of the Fire

This is definitley a sad day friends. But fear not, Dubai workers are amongst the fastest in the world! 20 days and 20 nights will ensure this opens on time!

I hope Amusement Whitewater can fix the exterior soon.

Wonder if it is at all possible to get it fixed before the 24th?

Are you kidding? That is one -ucking nightmare! Not as bad as it could of been is a few rooms or maybe even one wing catching fire, but this lobby is the heart and gym of the whole of the project. It's the diamond on the ring.

My question is what idiot in charge let this happen. This isn't an act of God, but an act of human incompetency. What's to stop the same sort of thing happening when it's all full of guests? This is a huge screw up--this is an Infinity tower scale disaster, if not worse. Say, good bye to any opening for at least a year!
Christmas at the VERY best imo.....at least half the season gone......now thats expensive!:bash:

What could easily have happened is the top or the sides catching fire as well. I'm actually surprised the top didn't
Yes it is a huge screw up. It's not an infinity tower scale disaster in terms of getting it fixed. I think it could be fixed in a few months definitely. It's just that it was just about to open and could just as easily caught fire while full of guests which some maintenance work went on.
Do you think the Water Park will open regardless?
I can't see how it can open without the Hotel etc. This is a company that wants to launch something big on a global scale and as such it has to be 100% right. How can the press arrive to take photos and there is a tarpaulin over the main hotel lobby? Thats even if they paint over the scorch marks / check for structural damage over the lobby etc. in time for the 24th Sept.

People aren't going to be happy to fly in as per their reservation, be told they can visit the Water Park but they will have to stay at the Al Barsha Holiday Inn Express.
Its not as bad as it looks, mostly external damage. Everything will be fixed and should still open on Sept 24th!
Oh no! I was so ecstatic after seeing all the images on the last page. And now this... it is just terrible.

Dubai really has to work harder on preventing all these fires.
The early morning fire that broke out at Atlantis, The Palm Jumeirah resort caused limited damage, according to a company spokesperson. The fire was contained and affected only the external roof and the lobby dome. The Dale Chihuly centrepiece in the lobby has not been affected, said the spokesperson.

"The site was fully evacuated of all staff and no one was injured," said the spokesperson. "All safety and fire systems operated in accordance with standard operating procedures and emergency services worked quickly to extinguish the fire."

According to the spokesperson, Atlantis will open on September 24 as scheduled.
