The Sun Herald (20/11/2011) reports that the hotel needs to have 1000 rooms in it because Sydney is going to need up to 12 000 additional hotel rooms in the years ahead.

bring back BIG RED.

I'd be happy with the current design, but at 213 metres.

Typical. Sydney just can't do anything half exciting these days. Something like the SOH will not be repeated for a long while.

Im disapointed the Fatty O'Barrel hasn't turned out to be NSW's answer to Kennett, Fatty is all wind and no action..
Caving in to the minority nimbys is his 1st fail..

This is not something new, Sydney's always been like this... Great projects have only come from perseverance, it took decades before Bradfield was able to convince the government to build the SHB. And the SOH was only done because the Sydney Symphony Orchestra insisted on it and demanded it's location be bennelong point, they said they would refuse to use a concert hall built any where else. And it was good fortune that the design competition picked the right design!
I hope Lend Lease doesn't give in, it takes balls and determination to build something great in this city.

The premier is recommending the relocation of the hotel. Lend Lease does have permission to build the pier and erect the hotel.

hno: So it's up to Lend Lease and whether they value their relationship with the Premier more than the quality of the project...

The biggest problem this time is that not only have the chosen the wrong design over hundreds of better concepts but they have watered down the original vision they did choose. Whatever we get will be a sad reflection of how things happen in Sydney and we will be stuck with it for decades to come.

It's stunning, and original.

The original renderings were so suspect that noone really knew what it looked like. This would easily have been our most exciting and interesting building since the SOH. the new hotel they are trying to get up is revolting and looks like something that would be built in Dalian.

I am assuming they bought that render out back in 2009 when the whole thing was made public.

Avatar, what did the people at the community information session think of the design itself back in 2010? Millux can answer this too. I remember my group didn't have any real worries about the design, but rather the facilities inside that were the problem.

The detailed image had not been released until 2010 from what i recall. It was not until the design was pretty much changed to the new design that I actually saw it. If it came out sooner it was never marketed.

People were mostly concerned with community facilities, water and street access, and activation at street level. Activation was a massive issue for the group. It came up again and again. People were worried about the parkland becoming a ghost-town, with little or no clarity of access from the other areas of the site. The building heights and bulk were not a massive issue, and of the few that commented most were happy enough with the need for a commercial aspect.

While I voiced my concerned on the look of the building, this was before the rendering above was made public. It's hard to say if it was a final design or a early concept. It is certainly the most detailed and most delightful of all hotels put forward to date.

That render was not released at all. That image is a photo I took from an exhibition book that I bought after seeing the model in person in the architecture section of the London Royal Academy of Arts 2010 Summer Show. Ironically the display was talking about how architects often need to constantly evolve and change their designs for their clients due to other external factors.
