^^ Maybe they're not able to? Accor might have had legal rights over the name, with it being an Art Series Hotel.

Also, the name wouldn't fit with the other hotel names in the Crystalbrook Collection.

The issue is that one of the things that gives this hotel a degree of "cool" is the name and the art inside by the same artist. Once you start to dumb down the interiors for a generic hotel style you lose a certain something which might just be a competitive edge.

I recently stayed at one of his hotels in Cairns (Riley) and I can see this hotel at Howard Smith Wharves (from a style/feel point of view), fitting in very well with the others in his collection.

Google what plans he has for two hotels (one 6 and one 5 star) at the Port Douglas Marina, which he also owns.

I agree, I think it is a perfect fit for the Crystal Brook collection.

The Cairns hotels were closed when I was up there so I couldn't see much inside, but externally they looked heads and shoulders above many of the existing hotels up there.

Their Port Douglas plans look rather swish!

The conversion of Howard Hall into Felons' Beer Hall has taken place:

New beer hall opens at Howard Smith Wharves
It’s Oktoberfest at inner-Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves, with the launch of a German-inspired beer hall at the riverfront development. Here’s what you can expect to find inside.

Brisbane’s struggling Howard Smith Wharves precinct will today open a German-inspired beer hall, after Brisbane City Council approved its desperate application to turn one of its unused event spaces into a restaurant and bar facility.

Felons Barrel Hall will take over the Howards Hall space along the riverfront, offering aged beers, a fresh food offering and cultural performances.

“We want Felons Barrel Hall to be a cultural experience for all to share and enjoy, from the beers to the menu to the live performances,” said HSW director Adam Flaskas. “We have worked day and night and put our heart and soul into this unique, new offering for Brisbane.”

The conversion of the function space to a beer hall comes as the dining and entertainment precinct struggles to turn a profit, operating at just 30 per cent of capacity under new Covid restrictions.

The beer hall will specialise in interesting beer flavours aged in old wine barrels, with the brews served in German half litre and one litre steins. The food will be an elevated pub offering ranging from rainbow painted crayfish to Moreton Bay bug loaded fries, alongside a variety of vegetable and salad options.

Entertainment is hoped to be a big drawcard as the venue showcases family-friendly tunes, emerging artists and some of Australia’s leading performers, as well as viewings of arthouse films and interactive performances.

Went and had a drink in there last night - i doubt this is temporary. They've ripped up the old Howard's Hall floor, and the bar/brewery set ups in there look pretty permanent. I'm guessing they just can't for the forseeable future see a world in which events return to their old capacity - and they wanted to use the site as much as possible.

I suspect this will be around for a fair while!

Sounds like State Government/City Council squabbling is delaying the "40 minute" ferry service to Straddie...

Ferry service linking Brisbane's CBD with Straddie hits approval snag

A ferry service linking Brisbane's CBD with North Stradbroke Island, which the Palaszczuk government promised would open by Christmas, is yet to take a single passenger because it has not been certified by council.

In September, then-tourism minister Kate Jones announced three new pontoons would be built at Howard Smith Wharves.

Howard Smith Wharves is a step closer to having its own CityCat terminal.

The project would be a "game changer" for Brisbane residents, especially those living in the north and west of the city, who have to drive about 30 kilometres from the CBD to the Cleveland terminal.

Construction of one of the pontoons has finished but is "waiting on Brisbane City Council certification before it can be used as a passenger terminal", a Tourism Department spokesman said.

Brisbane City Council Deputy Mayor Krista Adams said she was disappointed that the state government was "trying to shift the blame" onto council.

"The state government is responsible for any delays to a state government project," she said.

'The project would be a "game changer"? Another game changer? How many changes to the game can we tolerate? This term is still so over used. I saw that a proposal to fill in a few pot holes in my local street would be a "you know what" for our community.

Well if you live in that street and have to drive around the potholes everyday, then yes it would be a game changer for you. For everyone else, we wouldn't care.
