Reservoir at Marina ready for use by 2009

13 Jan 2004

PLANS to dam up the Marina basin and turn it into a reservoir are on track.

The authorities are also looking to create more sources of water for Singapore by doing the same at the Seletar River and, possibly, the Serangoon River too.

The Public Utilities Board's assistant director for water reclamation, Mr Benny Seah, told reporters yesterday that the Marina basin will be dammed up by 2006.

The reservoir itself will be ready for use by 2009, after the water has settled.

Mr Seah was speaking at a media briefing on the Singapore Green Plan 2012to unveil 155 action plans formulated to achieve the plan's targets. These aim to sustain the environment.

The action plans are the work of six committees, which cover clean water, clean air, waste management, nature conservation, public health, and international and environmental relations.

The plans include revising the Red Data Book of Singapore, which covers endangered animals and plants, as well as introducing new parks in areas such as Sengkang.

One suggestion is to set up a separate chute in Housing Board flats for recyclables, to help manage waste. The National Environment Agency (NEA) is studying launching a pilot project on this.

The 155 strategies will be reviewed every three years. People can read them and give their feedback at the NEA website, www.nea.gov.sg

Environment Minister Lim Swee Say yesterday also announced that an annual report card to track Singapore's environmental progress and determine what needed to be done, would be drawn up.

This will be ready by March.

yea...he told me bout that too....and he also showed me during our trip to URA gallery ;)

I am kinda excited to see how are they gonna do it! :)
Is that where they are going to build the dam? Across those huge chunks of green land?

Because I thought that was where they will build the new coastal expressway?
Are they damming Marina Bay or Kallang Basin?
Yea you are right raffi...that is where the dam will be built across. Redstone, they are damming both....

Gee.......I have mixed feelings about this damming project. While its good I get to capsize in fresh water if I ever go kayaking there again, somehow I am worried about security issues and astetics.

Isnt there a police coast guard base in Kallang Basin??
but then the singapore river won't ever feel the same again, will it?

It will be like urinating into a toilet bowl instead of a urinal? :D

Exactly! And i'm perfectly serious about what i just said. The singapore river has always been a river, and to turn it into a reservoir just makes me feel a little strange inside. I mean, the Singapore River has always been more than just a river to the people of Singapore, hasn't it?
Brother...I dunt think they are going to dam up the rivers and flood them and make them wider......we will become Venice if we try that...

I think they call the "dam" a "tidal barrier" because its suppose to act as a sort of outlet flow mechanism during low tide to clear accessive water in the reservoir and to prevent salt water from coming in during high tide?

Har? What toking you? I didn't mean anything like that! :baaa:

Okay. I guess my explanation asn't that good. What i meant was, don't you think it's going to have some sort of sentimental impact?
Pyschologically and sentimentally? Yes it has an impact. I do find it weird. But then again, it already IS weird. Those huge chunks of land are man-made in the first place. Nobody likes feeling landlocked.

@huaiwei, what security is there to worry about? With that dam it would seem encroachers would be kept out. So it wont be a solid dam but a porous one? Cant wait for renditions.
They also gonna build a new expressway further out to sea. Together with this new tunnel, this will really take Singapore into the new millenium. I suppose young kids growing up this century will think it is perfectly normal and will be amazed that the Singapore River once poured out into open sea where the ships came close:cheers:

Haha! That would be so funny! :colgate:
Haha....coz presently, the Coast guard and other ships can sail right up to the city when ther are emergencies and so on. That wont be very possible soon right?

Also, it makes me wonder what would happen if someone drops cyanide into the water from the Esplanade Bridge....

the new expressway should be right over the dam or underneath I think.

Anyway, they will also be wondering why are there various stuff called "Clifford Pier" and so on when you cant have ships docking there anymore.....

haha..I think thats nightmarish, but that could theoretically happen to any of the other reservoirs. I am sure there will be a marina bay coastguard or something.

Yes it can happen, as can be read in a local fictional work! :D Somehow I just feel that the level of pollution is much higher in that area then in most of our other reservoirs, which tend to have a green buffer around them, including even Bedok Reservoir and Jurong Lake, while Pandan reservoir is mostly surrounded by Industries and a HDB estate, and the water mostly used for the industries anyway.
If I remembered correctly, architects and planners were invited to propose a scheme for that area many many years ago. Coincidentally, Kenzo Tange and another architect(can't remember who he was) both proposed to develop that area into a reservoir.
I wonder how much it will cost..didnt know that it was an old proposal.
