No temporary stadium when National Stadium is demolished
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE: There are no plans to build a temporary stadium in place of the National Stadium at Kallang when it is demolished for the building of the new sports hub.

The Acting Minister for the Community Development, Youth and Sports says Singapore also does not need an intermediate size stadium for the moment.

Replying to questions in Parliament, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan stressed what's needed is the optimal use of the existing regional stadiums in Singapore for sporting and other activities.

He said: "The Ministry will work to ensure that the facilities are affordable. But having said that, you also have to bear in mind that at the end of the day someone still has to pay for it. It is a question of how much the user will pay versus how much you want the taxpayers to pay. Our prime focus should be to get the overall cost down and we can do that best by running things cost- efficiently."

As for the sports hub, tenders will be called next year and construction start in 2007.

It should be completed by 2010.

the old stadium could hold 60000 right? why a capacity decrease?
"The study further recommended that the Sports Hub include a new world-class national stadium with a spectator capacity of between 45,000 to 55,000
will singapore ever bid for the olympics?
why not? many smaller cities have hosted the olympics...

as for land... just tear down the national stadium and build again lor... reclaim land? aiyar you see so many huge expanses of unused land in singapore.. sure got lar.
use the architecturally distinctive stadium for the olympics as an art museum / lifestyle hub (aka shopping centre and f&b shit) perhaps?
no gehry please
maybe foster
maybe calatrava

jean nouvel?

or will alsop

or khr as architects

or just take WOHA also can :)
jean nouvel leh... fit singapore's image of sterility?
i never thought carparks would be a problem since you can just dig further underground?
i guess the mrt + a good bus system might cut that number greatly?
wembley is no where near as pretty as the beijing nest.
somehow i dont have high hopes for this project
no chance - singapore's too miserly.
its not very beautiful - quite retro - fun
maybe they'll do a mass renovation of all sports facilities to make them look presentable. but without any new facility i imagine it'd be terribly embarrassing next to beijing's amazing transformation.
i dont know if it looks better than the old one, but it really looks kinda slipshod.

anyway, i dont think anything should be qualified by being 'better than the old one', but rather, if it fits today's standards.

this is very very beautiful!
