The contract to build the world's largest retail development comprising 12 million square feet of total space and which features 5 million square feet of total retail space, is worth AED 2.7 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2007.

Turner Construction International are Emaar's project managers for The Dubai Mall. DPA Singapore are the Mall's architects while Meinhardt is the engineering consultant.

'Emaar has signed the joint venture partnership of DBB-AG & CCC to be their main contractors in the development of The Dubai Mall. Dutco Balfour Beatty has proved its merit on a number of our projects currently in various stages of development and we feel they have the capacity to deliver,' said Issam Galadari, Executive Director Projects, Emaar Properties. 'We will also shortly be nominating contractors for the Mall's mechanical, electrical and plumbing works.'

The Burj Dubai development will incorporate, among other things the world's tallest tower, the world's largest retail development, a vast man-made lake, a distinctive landscaped park, a boulevard to match the best in the world, an upscale residential complex, a seven-star boutique hotel and a town that takes residents back into the Arabia of old.

'This is no ordinary Mall. There are design elements that will require great expertise. Our designers and engineers have ensured all factors flow in tandem with the overall design, look and feel of this unique mall which is indeed going to offer a lifestyle experience which goes beyond mere shopping,' he added.

The Dubai Mall boasts many attractions including the world's largest indoor Gold Souq, several food courts, Waterfront Atrium, Fountain Oasis, a dedicated high fashion area, Olympic sized ice-rink, The Aquarium and Kiddy Land.

Landscaped gardens and parklands with stunning water features will add to the charm of The Mall. In terms of convenience, some 15,000 parking spaces are planned. On completion, The Dubai Mall expects to attract 35 million visitors in the first full year of business, with a continuing growth of 20 to 30 per cent a year.

'People will choose The Dubai Mall for wholesome family entertainment as well as for an exclusive shopping experience. The tourists will choose The Dubai Mall because it represents what Dubai stands for: a global city with a global vision,' Issam continued.

Since the opening of The Dubai Mall Leasing Centre in June this year, Emaar has received an overwhelming response from international and regional retailers who want to be part of its unrivalled retail environment, which will be home to the globe's most esteemed brand names. More than 40 percent of the Mall's retail concepts will be new to this region.

The Dubai Mall claims two global awards
The Dubai Mall was globally recognised as the most innovative and visionary retail project in the world when it won two prestigious awards at the first annual Retail Future Project Awards at MAPIC, Cannes.

Emaar Properties' unique development claimed the Best Retail Development Scheme (Large) and the Best Use of Lighting in a Retail Environment awards.

MAPIC International Market for Retail Real Estate invited entries from companies involved in the procurement of retail developments including owners, investors, architects, designers, contractors and suppliers. DPA Singapore are the Mall's architects.

Emaar will be presented the awards during a glittering ceremony in Cannes at the Palais des Festival on November 17, 2004.

'The grandeur and magnitude of The Dubai Mall has certainly inspired the award organizers who have confirmed the Mall will be ground breaking in its very concept and it illustrates ideas that will energise the retail development of the future,' said Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Executive Director, Retail, Emaar Properties.

The Best Retailed Development Scheme (Large) award recognised The Dubai Mall's role to make a definitive contribution to the city. The award also noted that the mall's development is sustainable, respects the quality of the built environment in the wider community and is sufficiently flexible to respond to changing demands and patterns of retailing.

The Best Use of Lighting in a Retail Environment award valued the Mall's cutting- edge lighting technology that enhances the quality, ambience, and productivity levels of its retail environment.

'For the Best Retailed Development Scheme award we highlighted the urban contribution The Dubai Mall will make to the Burj Dubai Development Master Plan and the city of Dubai. We also emphasised on the architectural design of the facade, recessed motifs and the use of energy regeneration to address the climatic conditions of Dubai,' Ibrahim said.

'On the lighting award, The Dubai Mall focused on four key ideas of lighting, namely diffused lighting; filtered lighting; aquatic lighting and translucent lighting - themes which considered natural lighting effects arising from architectural design. The design of our skylights, the waterfalls at Fountain Oasis and even the orientation towards North-South direction were the architectural ideas we explored and emphasized in this prestigious competition,' he continued.

'Over the past few years, Dubai has offered more choices in shopping, dining and entertainment than any other city in the region. With The Dubai Mall, Emaar has raised the bar on these choices and has excited the people's taste for better things in life,' Ibrahim added.

The Dubai Mall boasts many attractions including the world's largest indoor Gold Souq, several food courts, Waterfront Atrium, Fountain Oasis, a dedicated high fashion area, Olympic sized ice-rink, The Aquarium and Kiddy Land.

A unique blend of sophisticated retail and luxury leisure facilities, The Dubai Mall is only one element of the sprawling Burj Dubai Development. This iconic urban development also features the Burj Dubai the world's tallest tower, the Old Town, the Residences and Office Park, the Boulevard and is spread across nearly 500 acres of lush landscaped gardens and parkland.

The Dubai Mall has been planned with recreation, amenities, ambience, attractive landscaping, a sense of place and a feel-good environment all given priority. The property major expects to attract 35 million visitors in the first full year of business, with a continuing growth of 20 to 30 per cent a year.

The group said its jointly owned Dutco Balfour Beatty division would build the Burj Mall shopping centre with the company Al Ghandi/CCC.

I think they mean that the areas surrounding Dubai have a combined total population of 3.2 billion, and these people have no respectable shopping mall, so they'll come to Dubai Mall to fulfil their needs :D

Anyway, with all that crap in the media recently about Palm Deira being bigger than London or Manhattan, I wouldn't take such statements too seriously.

i guess they want to point out that there will be a lot of visitors from this part of the world. it's close and might convince people even more to visit dubai :dunno:

But 3.2 billion people? Don't they mean million, or is there a rule im unknown with. Because here in Norway we count billion as 000 000 000 000. And then 3.2 billion people is half the population on earth. We're 6.4 billion people on earth. Its impassible that 3.2 billion of them lives in Dubai...;)
