Computers: Where To Get A New One? Where To Dispose Of The Old One?

237 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Un known
Which manufacturer should I get a new computer from?
1. Hewlett Packard: My current computer. Still alive after 6 years. But 17'' CRT monitor is dimming, flickering and there are ''dead'' areas on the screen. CPU keeps hanging even though I am doing nothing.
2. Compaq: My first computer. It sucked. Didn't last 3 years. Had a virus attack, then the CD drive failed and then the motherboard got burnt.
3. Acer
4. Dell: At the top of my list now of manufacturers to get my new computer from. Apparently its cheap compared to other brands. And customizable with support.
5. DIY: I don't really wanna put together one myself, even though it will be done by a Sim Lim Square ''expert''. Uncertain about warranty, support over the years and the fact that things might not fully be compatible with each other though its cheap.

Where do I dispose of my old ones? And get some pathetic amt of cash for them
1. A working 14'' CRT monitor.
2. A flickering 17'' CRT monitor.
3. A faulty Epson printer.
4. A working HP Deskjet printer.
5. An occasionally hanging P3 733mhz CPU.
6. A DEAD P1 233mhz CPU.
7. 2 sets of working speakers.
8. 1 set of non scroll mouse.
9. 1 set of faulty scroll mouse.
10. 2 sets of working keyboards.
11. 1 52X CD Rom Drive.

You use a DELL? Does it come with useless programs that you pay for in the end like Microsoft Works and those extras useless software? Or is it clean like just its just installed with WIN XP? (I hope) Why is it not bad?

What to look out for when getting a PC?

Anyone else got any advice as well? HELP!

And should I try to squeeze the life out of my current pc and wait for the release of Windows Vista end 2006/early 2007 before buying a new one?

It depends on your usage....if u play a lot of games, then u need a better PC....if U merely use your PC for pictures, internet, Microsoft office etc....then most Pentium 4 PC would satisfy your needs....

Those programes they give is actually free for about 3 months.....after that they will prompt u to subscribe....I always delete the programe after that if I find it worthless.....
My laptop is Fujitsu and I'm very happy with it ^ ^
I'd probably never buy a branded desktop PC 'cause it's much more expensive (why not buy a Mac then ^ ^ ), they always come with one or two crappy components to pull the manufacturing price down, and as you mentioned they always install a lot of useless software on them...
But if I HAD TO, I'd probably give Fujitsu a second go ^ ^
you can try DELL, Acer and Fujitsu, they are good :) Toshiba and Samsung isnt that bad either (but isnt cheap too)

give us your demands of the PC :) (i.e what you are going to use it for) and we will try to help you narrow down a PC :)
here r the lifespan listings:
Dell, acer = cheap but dont last past 4-5yrs(if u have warrenty, if not <2yrs)
samsung, hp, compact = somewhere in the middle
IBM (or shud i say lenovo), fujitsu, toshiba, mac!!! = if u want them to last close to forever

o yea, u really should try posting a hardwarezone
Budget's around $1500-$2000.
I need a desktop that can do some gaming, because my current one is so lousy I havent played a game on it in a while.
I need one with hardware that wont need upgrading for quite some time to come, cause I hate upgrading computers.
And minus all the useless software like microsoft works and mediaring and hardware like 3.5 floppy.
I saw a DELL Dimension 9150. Its stats change everynow and then. But there was once I saw it having 1GB ram plus 160GB harddrive plus 15 inch monitor plus 256 MB graphics card or something.

Thanks for all the help so far guys!!!

Get the best u can then......
here you go, i have configured one from DELL that is just under 2K

http://dellstore02.sg.dell.com/publ...jsp?frompage=content&uvst=0027389015616712142

major changes include:
-3 YRS warrenty
-1GB RAM @ 667MHz
-optical mouse
-Card reader
-basic Creative sound card (not intel integrated nor X-Fi)

If you can afford more, you can try upgrading the RAM to 2GB @533 or 667MHz also can, and perhaps an upgrading of the speakers to a Surround sound ones will be good too, upgrade of sound card if you want better sound experience (X-Fi cards)

NOTE: This config does NOT include Microsoft Office, that is MS word, PP, Excel, picture manager etc etc... those softwares cost about 350+, or you can get them from AHEM AHEM you know from external sources

Get an Intel Mac. You can dualboot Windows and Mac on it. It has a good GPU and it will be suitable for gaming. Price is around 2400.

Thanks for configuring one for me. This is certainly worth looking at. Sorry for troubling you! How did you get it so cheap for what you get? Even the setup recommended by DELL isnt that powerful for the same price.

I never considered a mac, but I just might consider one now considering all the gd comments i have heard abt it. But I will need to look into the finer details. I still have quite some time to decide. My current computer is still alive, albeit struggling to stay alive.
i second the intel mac vote :) you'd probably end up using mac os instead of windows once you start
Mac OS has a lot of built in applications. You can use the Windows for gaming and Mac Os for other work. it is safer and more stable than Windows. The dual core CPU is 3 times as fast as the previous model. You also get a 250 gb hard drive and an excellent 20 inch screen. The 17 inch model costs only 1800. It also has a built in camera.
Right now I am using a Mac and I am happy with it.
actually Mac released a new Beta software called Bootcamp...it allows you to use either Windows or Mac when you start up your Mac Intel Duo-core PC. Not sure if the software is a public beta, but you can google for more info.

as for the configaration its just the matter of picking the right stuff :) hope that helps :)
Bootcamp is not a beta. It is a full version.
