I wonder if the old airport will become a military facility. I flew in there about 2 years ago and it looked more like a military airport with very few commercial planes around.

Water and road networks in Khartoum's New International Airport (17/07/07)

Sudan's President, Omer Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir, recently inaugurated the first phase of Khartoum's New International Airport located in Omdurman, after the national companies accomplished the preparatory work, including provision of electricity, water and road access to the airport.

During the inaugration, Al- Bashir affirmed the Presidency’s commitment to supporting the vital project. Urging the signing of a contract with the financing company, the President lauded the Project Execution Unit Administration for its distinct and well-programmed performance.

Al-Bashir praised Khartoum State for its unprecedented accomplishments, one of which is the asphalting of Khartoum roads that would make Khartoum more appealing.

He instructed the Governor to take all the necessary measures that would control shanty towns, particularly in the New Airport area. Moreover, he urged the State to formulate well conceived plans that would ease off the present congestion in Khartoum town centre by shifting part of the business traffic to the new site.

Appreciating cooperation and coordination among the said three States surrounding the New Airport, Bashir stressed the need to collaborate for constructing Kosti-Abuhalib road that would revive a vast area rich in animal resources, which used to be served by Khartoum-Kosti River Navigation Line.

He noted that this New Airport was planned to be financed by the Late Sheikh Zaid simultaneously with Oman Airport.

The President of the Republic directed the allocation of a special landing strip, as well as a special area for Sudan Airways as a national carrier.
