Cool architecture from the 1950s, 60s & 70s? Show me

Let me first say that normally I'm no big fan of architecture from the time. Actually I would like most things built in these years, to be removed from the surface of the earth. There are exceptions though, and that's what I would like to see here.

So this is what I'm looking for:

Photos (w/ descriptions) of cool building from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
The buildings should have some kind of interesting architectural features, so please don't just give me some commieblocks. I know there's people that love these, but that is not what I'm looking for here. The buildings should also "work" today, meaning that they still are cool.

Herning Svømmehal

I'll start out with one of the very few examples we have here in Herning. It's the local swimming bath, and it was built around 1970, and opened the year after. It underwent a major renovation in the middle of the 1980s, but the outline of the building wasn't changed. The architect is the local MAA Anton Christensen. Oh, and before somebody talk about the dirty looking outdoor pool, it looks this dirty because it don't open until june 1st. I'm sure they'll clean it before that.

Two shots from today:

Any buildings you like from this time? Show me yours. :)

Hehe that was some fast replies. :D

@ Moolio: Is that a music hall of some kind or conference perhaps?

@ Jarmo K: Yeah it's a quite nice building. :) The other photos I have are quite alike, so no more for now. Hope I'll see some buildings from you here too. :)

Both actually. It's best remembered as the main venue of 1973 Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE).
^ok :)

so this is one of the most impressive pieces of modernist architecture in estonia, designed by our grand old man of modernism, toomas rein.

it's an administrative building for the rapla kolkhoz, situated in the town of rapla. it was finished in 1977.

but honestly, i don't know what it is used for nowadays...

moolio - googling for photos is so 2006, try using flickr to get better photos (; [i mean, the second photo is just ugh, quality-wise that is :D)
That first building is sensational! It almost looks like there is nothing behind it, I mean behind the glass front :)
I like Herning Svømmehal very much!

I'm a fan of the 50-shopping architecture of the ABC suburbs of Stockholm. All buildings are unique.

I'm also a fan of the "Avant garde" subway stations...

Shopping in Luleå in the north parts of Sweden (was the first indoor shopping mall in Europe by the way). Built in 1955, designed by the famous architect Ralph Erskine, who wanted to create a mall for people to enjoy and socialize - even with the cold winter climate of northern Sweden. Apparently he got the idea when visiting a outdoor shopping mall in Canada during the winter... hehe

In case anyone missed this one in the church thread

Ishavskatedralen (Arctic Cathedral)

Just opposite the city of Tromso on the island of the same name, in the suburb of Tromsdalen, is one of Norway's most famous modern structures. Technically, not a cathedral, but simply the church of Tromsdalen, it was consecrated in 1965. The entire east wall, unveiled in 1972, is formed by one of the largest stained-glass windows in Europe.

is it ok to post a few estonian buildings from the early 1980's that still bear the modernist / brutalist ideology / identity?
estonian song festival arena in tallinn. 1957-1960, designed by architects alar kotli and henno sepmann. the same project, but with some modifications, was used for the building in vilnius. today it is used in every 5 years for the grand estonian song festival. big open air concerts are also held here. there are exhibition rooms inside the building.
