Schapelle Corby rushed to hospital

By Cindy Wockner and Komang Suriadi in Bali

June 21, 2008 12:00am

SCHAPELLE Corby has been taken to hospital suffering depression and is being treated by a psychiatrist.

The Daily Telegraph understands that the 30-year-old has been suffering from bouts of depression and stress for some time now and has been frequently upset in jail.

Corby was taken from Bali's Kerobokan Jail to the International Wing of Sanglah Hospital, in Denpasar late yesterday and her treating psychiatrist said last night that she was expected to be hospitalised for some time.

In depth: Schapelle and Mercedes

Her elder sister Mercedes, who recently returned to Bali after a defamation win against Channel 7 in the Sydney courts, was last night by her sibling's side.

"Schapelle is suffering depression she needs to be hospitalised for medical supervision until a medication regime is worked out," Mercedes told The Daily Telegraph from the hospital.

"Things have been really tough for Schapelle," she said.

Corby has endured the death of her beloved father and also her step-father whilst she has been in jail and earlier this year lost her last appeal against her drug smuggling conviction and 20-year sentence.

She was in tears after this news and is understood that since then has struggled to cope with the helplessless of her situation.

Her move to hospital comes as a behind the scenes documentary is due to aired on Australian television on Sunday night about Corby's arrest, conviction and legal battles.

Dr Lely Setiawati, a psychiatrist who is treating Corby, said last night it was uncertain how long Corby would need to remain in hospital.

"From looking at her we plan to have her hospitalised and give her treatment," Dr Setiawati said.

She would not comment on the exact nature of Corby's illness saying she was yet to make a full diagnosis.

Sanglah Hospital's PR director, Putu Putra Wisada, confirmed last night that Corby was suffering depression but said he was uncertain how long the young Australian would need to remain under hospital care.

Corby is currently in Room 104, a standard room in the hospital's new International Wing, which was partially funded by Australian aid money after the first Bali bombing.

The Daily Telegraph understands that for much of this year Corby has been severely stressed and depressed at her situation and had felt lonely during the period when her sister Mercedes was in Sydney attending her defamation trial.

"She had no-one to share her feelings with and talk with, I think," said one source last night.

Her beloved father Michael Snr also died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer and Corby was distressed at being away from his side during his final weeks and was then unable to attend his funeral.

Then in April her step-father, her mother Ros' partner Greg also passed away.

Then she had a double blow when the Supreme Court in Jakarta, the highest court in Indonesia, dismissed her appeal against her 20-year drug smuggling sentence.

It was he last appeal chance save for a Presidential plea for clemency something which Corby will never do because it would mean admitting guilt.

Since this time, jail insiders say that Corby has been frequently prone to depression and easily finding herself in tears.

Her lawyer Erwin Siregar said recently that whenever he visited Corby she was "very very sad" and that she often broke down in tears whilst talking with him, telling him once "I want to go home."

Her credibility is being constantly eroded by the constant revelations of her family's connections to and use of drugs.. But having said that I am starting to feel sorry for her. I agree 5 years would seem appropriate for that crime

Yep, always thought she was guilty, but because she is ( or was ) cute and had a nice personality she won over most dumb arse Australian's into thinking she was innocent. Great strategy. It was only a matter of time til she came unstuck.

but the HBO special which has being filmed for 3 years basically crucifies her family and legal help.
all of them stuffed up in someway or other.
no one is US know about the case. so they called - Schapelle Corby: Ganja Queen.

Hard to believe she been in jail for the last 4 years (in October). I suppose the best she can hope for is a Presidential pardon after 10-12 years. If at all.

^ you only begin to qualify for a reduction in sentence via presidential pardon if you admit your guilt, ask for forgiveness and show remorse.

I think people in this thread have been extremely judgemental as if you all never make mistakes

No one should be judged by others ever even if they committed a crime that's why we have a legal system
