Can someone tell me why all these old pubs are being demolished?? Surely they would serve as a mix in the new architecter of the University area, i mean what else are they gonna build in that small gap? Another square?
Totally agree with you Scaz - it's a needless waste. Access to and exit from the new car park have been designed around the car park (this is very clear from the Design & Access Statement available via the Planning Portal) so it makes you wonder why on earth they now seem intent on demolishing it.Can someone tell me why all these old pubs are being demolished?? I hope it is just the rear they are demolishing. The land there could be used for an interesting new build. Perhaps they could make the Peacock into something similar like the former Calcott Factory / Astleys Building (i.e. retain the main building but then build modern residences at the side/rear.Ask Cov Uni..,.
Although is the Peacock being demolished in whole or just the back of it?
Yeah, they should be rebuilding street frontages, and this is very much in the council's own documents along with stuff about height - they always seem to ignore, though.Totally agree with you Scaz - it's a needless waste. If anything, there should be an attempt to reconnect Far Gosford Street with Gosford Street and establish the streetline again, not puncture more holes in it! The other side of the street is already a complete mess with its set back, cheap and low level university buildings that look like they belong on an out of town commercial complex rather than in a city centre. Why do they seem set on ruining the decent other side?
The Coventry Society and the Victorian Society are involved trying to save the pub; if you have strong feelings about this then it'd be well worth dropping the Council/University a line.
William Morris building (Business and IT faculty). I don't agree, I think it adds a little quirky character to the area and just needs renovation and proper marketing as a student pub/cafe/restaurant.. a meeting place to hook up laptops, chat and drink. By the looks of the plans only some of it is being demolished to make way for the access point to the car park.I hope its all of it. Don't get me wrong in a way its a shame that yet another pub is being destroyed, but it would look ridiculous with all the large buildings overshadowing it. If it is a public space being created (as it looks like in one of the pics) it will enhance the red brick building (its name escapes me atm!). However, it won't make much sense as a public space unless part of it is access for the car park.
it's shame that you hate the place because of a minority of idiots (and they can be found anywhere if we're honest). there is a lot to like about coventry, for all its undoubted faults.William Morris building (Business and IT faculty). I love this car park building as I've been watching it build up, really quite quickly, from inside the Lanchester Library building. It's weird.. Even though I don't live in Cov (I *really* hate the place due to some of the chav dickheads that breathe there), I do have an affection for the Uni (study here), and the built environment that's going up around it.. and I'm always interested in new things happening in the town. I Like exploring the changes from when I first moved to the West Mids ten years ago.
Can't wait to see the new Engineering Faculty
