Cradle of Humankind mall underway
28 Mar 2012

The construction of a new shopping mall in the vicinity of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is well underway.

Cradlestone Mall will offer two levels of retail, with a proposed 230 shops and restaurants. There is ample parking available to shoppers with parking deck consisting of four levels, three of which will be undercover.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA's construction contract is due for completion in October 2013.

The shopping centre will have a unique look and feel, with references to the evolutionary finds of the area subtly reflected in the design elements featured in the façade, floors and roof-scapes.

Environmental considerations are high on the agenda and a full time environmental officer will monitor the construction process. The co-developers of the mall are Sasol Pension Fund and Retail Africa.

Safety will be top priority, and Aveng Grinaker-LTA is committed to living its safety vision of “Home Without Harm, Everyone Everyday”, stresses managing director Grahame McCaig.

He notes that a challenge for the contractor will be working with a very limited area available for laydown as the structure progresses, since the footprint of the building falls on the boundary of the site, limiting the space available.

To overcome this constraint, Aveng Grinaker-LTA plans to complete approximately 60% of the retail structure before commencing with the parkade.

The requirements for slab formwork on this contract will peak at approximately 6 000m2per week of cast concrete over a period of some six months. A total of 92 000 m3of concrete will be used in the project.

Elaborating on the mall's design, Jan Loubser of architects Bentel Associates International, explains that the Cradle of Humankind was the starting point for the design concept.

“We firmly believe in creating an identity for our shopping centres, to ensure a 'sense of place'.”

He says this uniqueness is particularly noteworthy in the face of ever increasing conformity in the layout and 'look and feel' of many current shopping centre projects.

The design sees the stratum of the earth's primordial layering replicated in the floors, ceilings and façade elements, he says. Both the shape and colouration can be found in the roof-scapes and entrances, Loubser says.

The central feature of the external façade - and covering the internal food court and entertainment zones - is the strata and layer shaped central roof-scape, he explains.

“Porous, both visually and physically from the external parking deck, this area spills out onto a public square and garden area.”

He says the landscaping here will hark back to the primordial forest, while around the rest of the centre it will be more in keeping with the Highveld landscape.

Good progress with this mall - it looks massive when driving down Hendrik Potgieter towards N14 Freeway. 8 cranes still working and it looks like a total of more than 8 levels. The website have interesting images.

Drove past the new mall on Saturday and they were busy removing the cranes. We got used to the 7 cranes on this construction site.

The roads surrounding have received a lot of work and traffic is already flowing better than before - until the centre opens.

Cradlestone Mall to open on 20 Nov
06 Nov 2013

The super-regional 76 000 square metre Cradlestone Mall is set to open its doors in Mogale City on 20 November 2013, with more than 200 stores offering unparalleled choice to shoppers, both local and from further afield.

Developed by Sasol Pension Fund, Pivotal Property Fund and Retail Africa, the mall is located at the intersection of the N14/R28 highways and busy Hendrik Potgieter Road, west of Johannesburg.

Signed-up anchor tenants include Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Game, Dion Wired and the Edcon Group.

“Major retailers were quick to seize the opportunity,” says Andries Schaap, general manager investment from Sasol Pension Fund.

He explains that the mall is positioned to attract middle to high-income shoppers from neighbouring Krugersdorp, Roodepoort and Randpark Ridge – but also from North West Province and even cross-border shoppers from Botswana.

In addition to national retailers, Cradlestone Mall offers specialty retailers like MBW Art West Rand and Apadana Rugs; and a diverse restaurant and fast food component, including Menchies, The Raj Express and Doppio Zero.

A Food Lover’s Market and Dischem are scheduled to open in early 2014.

Access and parking have been priorities for the developers, with a focus on ‘pop-in’ shopping for food and services, as well as longer shopping trips.

“With easy commute times from the north and north-west suburbs, Cradlestone Mall has been designed to offer a range of shopping options for our consumers,” he says

To ensure maximum accessibility, the developers invested R60 million widening Hendrik Potgieter leading to the intersection, as well as upgrading the interchange at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and the R28.

“Cradlestone Mall not only enjoys exceptional visibility from these major roads and highways, but we have also worked hard to ensure the mall is easily accessible to shoppers,” says Schaap.

The mall has 4 500 parking bays.

So the shops open tomorrow at 7am (20 November 2013). I just want to advise all shoppers that reflective jackets and hard hats are still mandatory on all construction sites!

I've merged this with the existing thread. Please make sure you search for existing threads in future using the forum's search option, or typing the name of the development along with "skyscrapercity" into google :) Thanks for the info though. It's a beautiful mall.
