"international and local interests are considering turning Christchurch's badly damaged former Forsyth Barr building into a hotel, as the city gears up for next year's Cricket World Cup.

Colliers International says it has had interest from both overseas and local players in converting the damaged office block into a 200-room, 4.5 to 5-star hotel."

Fingers crossed the Forsyth Barr is about to get a lease of new life!

It's pretty slow progress on this one isn't it

Seems to have been a lot of interior work. Hopefully we'll start to see them put the buildings exterior back to what it was soon.
Hope they can still meet the opening date. Is it scheduled for December this year?
Steelwork for the new podium thing now underway.

Walked past today and the floors are now installed on the new "podium thing" extension to the building.

Plenty of workers on site too which was good to see.
and still getting taller...?
Be nice of them to round it up to 20 floors. When it was first planned by Robert Jones it was going to be 21 but nimbys complained so the height was reduced to just 17. I still have the original news story for it somewhere.

There seems to have been a real issue with NIMBYs in that area. Its good that the council appears to largely ignore them now. They just started 30 years too late.

Ignore them, yeah right. Maximum height of 6 stories says it all really.
They did kick up back in the 1980's when there was a proposal to build The Tower in Victoria Square. 168 metres high if my memory is correct.

That was a knee-jerk reaction to the earthquakes that was given a voice by Share an Idea. Less NIMBY-ism more short-term fair of earthquakes. A good example of the council (and the govt) not giving a crap would be the moaning over the majority of the anchor projects, the Riccarton Bus Lounge, and many, many road changes (good or bad). So yes the council does ignore NIMBYs more than they used to.
I meant it looks like the podium is going to get taller...

Yeah it looks like they're extending it to the top parking level (5) and my guess would be its so they can fit more parking in if they're not converting all current parking into areas for the hotel.
Looking at side, there must be a building that will butt up to it. Or else wouldn't you have at least some sort of opening

One of the Preforming Arts Precinct buildings is earmarked for that site. I think that site is the Court Theatre site (if they ever sign the lease).
