"international and local interests are considering turning Christchurch's badly damaged former Forsyth Barr building into a hotel, as the city gears up for next year's Cricket World Cup.

Colliers International says it has had interest from both overseas and local players in converting the damaged office block into a 200-room, 4.5 to 5-star hotel."

Fingers crossed the Forsyth Barr is about to get a lease of new life!

That explains it, no plans for the theatre?
If you mean like renders and floorplans nothing has been released yet.

It's about time that they took the old Forsyth Barr sign down.
It's opening in mid-2017 so I guess they will probably get around to it soon. I'm looking forward to seeing it all finished.

The new Holiday Inn Express Christchurch hotel, set to open late 2018, will sit conveniently in the Christchurch CBD and a mere 100 metres from the new convention centre due to open in 2019. The property will also be within reach of “The Frame”, a large green space featuring cafes and restaurants, cycle paths, walkways and large landscaped areas for festivals and events. IHG also has a Crowne Plaza hotel currently under construction in Christchurch due to open mid-2017.

Update 1/10/2016

New windows going in on the southern side and finally the old signage is being removed and new ones presumably being put up at the top of the tower:

Was driving through the city last night and happened to notice the new Crowne Plaza signage. Good to see this building finally lit up again.

^^ Crowne Plaza is looking nice... I do miss the large atrium area at the back of the old Crowne Plaza with those large plush lounge chairs, the ambience of the live pianist. It was a great area to socialise with friends and other guests to the city at. I hope either Crowne Plaza, or another hotel can provide something similar to replace it.

Can't wait until they do something about the exterior grot.

I really happy to see that they seem to be stepping away from the original render and keeping the tower portion practically the same from the outside.

Its always been a relatively handsome building and I'm happy to see it kept after we've lost so many other buildings from the same time period.

Completely agree

You missed a spot. I wonder how many kilograms the building lost after that?

Scaffolding is also on its way down.

It's amazing how much a good clean can do for a building.

Also, nice to see work progressing next-door on the Isaac building
Is it just me of does the cladding still look very dirty?

It does a bit. I suppose there's only so clean you can get a 30 year old tower that's sat untouched for 6 years. Definitely a substantial improvement.
Hopefully they can still make the scheduled open date is it May or June?

Would have to depend in how much work they have to do inside. All those bathrooms, bedrooms etc, down stairs you've got the reception and bar(s) and restaurant(s). Big job converting an office building into a pretty classy hotel.
