When is R48 supposed to be an expressway all the way from Belotín (D1) to Český Těšín?
Great photos , i think your highways need shoulders :)
Actually this old stretch is just a national road (with 90kph speed limit) and it should be upgraded to expressway standards in the future - see the width between the pillars. The directions even weren't physically divided at all in the past.

Road construction seems to be progressing somewhat slower in CZ and SK than Poland or Hungary in the past 6 years... I wonder why.

well, i'm not sure about CZ, i mean if you look at the many 2x2 main roads they have, here in hungary we pay almost no attention to our main road network, personally i think it would be better if we allocated some of the expressway money and built ~2000 kms of ringroads on the ~9000 km (mostly) 2x1 main road network

just a thought

Chris:
I don't know anything about Hungarian motorways. The Polish progress is definitely noticeable, that EURO 2012 thing might be involved. ;) Construction in Slovakia now should really move forward with the PPP projects.

And for us... I don't dare making any comparisons, so I've just made some charts. :) They might not be perfectly accurate, but they give the overall image. 2009 and 2010 data are estimates.

So it seems that now we're in a stronger phase of construction. Three peeks can be clearly seen - end of 1970s, when D1 Prague-Brno was opened, 1997 with opening of D5 from Plzeň to Germany and 2006 - the D11.

This might seem slow, as you already had many roads before 2000.

We for example had 500 kms back then, with 1500 now.
There aren't many 2-lettered towns out there. I only know of Aš (CZ), 2× Au (A, CH), Ig (SLO) and... Oš (Kyrgyzstan). :D

D1 southwest of Ostrava will open 25-11-2009
In full- or half-profile?
I read somewhere that they'll open it in half-profile this year and in full profile next year.
I believe half of it will open with one carriageway, the other half as a full motorway.
Impressive photos.

I don't want to sound ignorant but what are these for? They look like random pieces of a tunnel scattered in random places on the road!

I assume those are ecoducts to strengthen the ecological structure in the area.

There have been discussions about the effectiveness of these wildlife crossings though.
