Especial Linfen, China

Young coal worker in Linfen (Shanxi, China)

Pollution near Linfen; Although Linfen a couple of years ago was named 'most polluted city on the planet' by the World Bank, I don't think they deserve that title anymore.

Linfen has still a long way to go before it can be called a green or clean city, but local residents say that the air quality is better than it used to be a couple of years ago.

Closure of the most polluting factories and more strict enforcement of the mandatory installation of environmental protection equipment at factories has a visible effect. But as long as coal remains the main source for China energy hunger, Linfen will remain an important industrial coalcenter.

Muddy road in Linfen

An elevated view of one of Linfen's main streets. Linfen has been named by some organizations as the dirtiest city in the world.

Sumqayit, Azerbaiyan.

"Titanic" is spraypainted on the side of the ship (in Cyrillic script).

Was detained by Azeri Military Police for an hour for taking these shots. Who would think this factory is operational?! Yes, I am stupid.

The full story found us in the town of Sumqayit, about a half hour from Baku. It used to be the headquarters of the Soviet chemical industry, sort of like the New Jersey of the USSR. The town had the highest infant mortality rate in the world.

After the collapse of the USSR, most of these factories shut down, and there is a stretch of several miles along both sides of the road leading north out of town that looks just like this - all rusted hulks and broken windows. We thought nothing of just hopping out of our taxi and walking straight at the factory, snapping away. That is, until my cohort said with alarm "There are guys in camoflage coming!"

They were not happy with us, and after being nice and saying we'd leave and trying to do so, they showed us their guns and said no come with us. We had no choice, though we left belongings in the cab. We convinced them to go with us back to the taxi and then take us wherever it was we were going. The got in the taxi with us and told the driver to take us somewhere - we don't speak Azeri and didn't understand where.

Long story short, no bribes were paid and after looking at our passports, and the pictures I could luckily show them on my digital camera, our explanations of "we're artists" and "we don't have factories this big in the U.S." seemed to win them over

...and this once-nice stretch of beach is crumbling and flooding.

Sorry you had to see that. We found three on the beach at Sumqayit, which has a reputation as the most polluted place on earth.

Kabul hillside

Two burqa-clad Afghan women walk past the war damaged Darlaman Palace in the west of Kabul, 22 February 2007. West Kabul was the scene of some of heaviest fighting between opposing warlords and the Taliban from 1992 through 1996, SHAH Marai

A Burqa clad Afghan woman walks past a destroyed building in Kabul, 15 February 2007. Although reconstruction of the Afghan capital is underway, many areas of the city still bear the scars of the country's two decades of war.

The dramatic cityscape of Kabul. From the Mausoleum of the King's grandfather over to the snow capped Hindu Kush mountains. The damage to the tomb is from extensive shelling.

Estaba siempre a full.

Villa Epecuen, four meters below Lake Epecuen since 1985. Used to be one important vacation center, now abandoned.

Nevada Nuclear Test Site

Between 1951 and 1992, there were a total of 925 announced nuclear tests at Nevada Test Site

A giant subsidence crater created from underground nuclear testing

The original actually looked like an atomic mushroom cloud, which is why I took the pic. Strangely only miles from the Nevada Test Site.

This is one of the test houses built for the 1955 Apple II atomic bomb test at the Nevada Test Site. The 29 kiloton test was meant to measure the civil effects of weapons. Mannequins were put up inside this house, which survived the detonation (houses closer to the epicentre were blown away).
