In today's planning notices

Lots 2338 & 2339, Town of Darwin
15 & 17 Cavenagh Street, Darwin City
Motel, Offices, Restaurant and Shop in
a 21 storey building including car
parking at level 2 to 5

Interesting proposal considering that the old CBA site has a similar description and one would think not all of these projects will be viable, remembering that some have already stalled, e.g. Chinatown, Arcadia.

This won't necessarily proceed immediately but for the developer they need to get a development permit in place and valid for 2 years before the new setback and volumetric controls become law because once they do they probably won't be able to viably go past 8 storeys.

The combined 2 sites are approximately 58m deep x 30.6m wide total. 6m set-back from each boundary gives a combined site of 46m x 18.6m = 855.6sqm for floor-plates above 25m Above Ground Level.
th epink development signs are still up on this one...the building has more grafitti and broken glass now so it needs to start otherwise will become dilapidated very soon.

...and this one which goes through to Cavenagh from the laneway behind. it's for a 20+ level mixed use tower - hotel, units, restaurant, office....

Wrong thread. The building proposed for the old CBA site is going through planning approval at the moment. They need to get planning approval before the proposed planning scheme changes (again!) as the proposal for this site would not be possible under the new scheme.

NT News published an article about this project today, including a render. They say work is to start on the site in June 2010.

I really hope the finished thing looks like the render. I think this would be an amazing looking building for Darwin!
^^ Hi and welcome 2muchtime

Thanks for that, for the discussion, here's the article. Looks good, except for the side blanks walls, but at least they have 2 colours:

New 5-star hotel planned for Darwin
NIGEL ADLAM
December 11th, 2009

An artists impression of the planned hotel

A BARRISTER and property developer are to build a 21-storey five-star hotel in the centre of Darwin.

Peter Maley and Chris Voudouris will join their 1000sq m blocks in Cavenagh St.

The $50 million tower block will have 166 rooms, up to six storeys of offices and four levels of car parking.

"The site is right in what is really the financial part of the CBD, rather than in the Mitchell Street entertainment strip," Mr Maley said.

"There's a big demand for five-star hotel accommodation in Darwin and for high-quality office space."

Tourism operators have long complained about the shortage of five-star hotels in the Territory.

Mr Voudouris, who owns TC Investments, will demolish his office block opposite the Cavenagh Hotel.

Mr Maley will demolish his office next door - a building that has been a men's shelter, pool hall and antique shop since it was built in the 1950s.

The Development Consent Authority has approved the plans and a liquor licence application has not drawn any objections.

Work on the new hotel is expected to start next June and will take 18 months to complete.

Mr Maley, who was a one-term Member of the Legislative Assembly for the CLP from 2001, has many Northern Territory business interests, including a cattle station.

He sold his share in the Victoria Hotel and Discovery nightclub last year.

And he sold the Lazy Lizard caravan park and bar in Pine Creek earlier this year.

Mr Voudouris has been behind several Darwin developments, including a retail complex in Casuarina.

is there big demand for office space? really?
There is demand for premium office space.

Anyone else notice the stylised "all-seeing-eye" at the top of the building?

Which building ? Do you mean that big square in yellow at the top of the last pic in the news article I posted? ^^

Interesting you pointed that out, I wonder what the real intentions the architects had when they put it in there?
Is this the first 5 star hotel in Darwin?

CROWN PLAZA and STARCITY CASINO are listed as 5 star. There are several 4.5 star.
The Medina at the Waterfront would have to be very close to 5-star, although I don't think it has been officially rated yet as it has not been open yet.

Territory 5-star seems to have a different standard to what they have in the southern states however!

Star ratings in Australia are run by each state and territory automobile association and it's the same rating scheme Australia wide. Read all about it at.... http://www.starratings.com.au/star-rating-scheme-categories/hotel.aspx

The one with the big square in yellow; you know, the one that quite obviously looks like a stylised all-seeing-eye.

Also, I doubt that an architect had anything to do with the design of this building.
