Delta Air Lines to launch non-stop service between Amman and New York JFK

Delta Air Lines, the leading U.S. carrier between the Middle East and the United States, has announced plans to operate nonstop service between Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport effective June 6, 2008

The four-times weekly flight will be the only nonstop service to the United States from Jordan operated by a U.S. carrier and will offer passengers convenient connections via Delta’s New York JFK hub to around 40 business and leisure destinations throughout the United States including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, Tampa and Dallas.

Speaking about the new service, Tony Charaf, Delta’s senior vice president of Operations said: “We are excited to pioneer new routes that expand our global reach and add convenience to the lives of our customers. The new nonstop service will offer many important travel options for business and leisure travellers thanks to the convenience of Delta’s connections via New York JFK and will also serve to increase commercial ties between Jordan and the United States by providing a convenient travel option for the thousands of American tourists wanting to discover the beauty of Jordan each year, helping to boost the country’s vibrant economy. For freight forwarders and cargo shippers, the route will expedite shipments of goods throughout the United States.”

Delta’s new nonstop service between Amman and New York JFK will be operated using 767-300ER aircraft with up to 214 seats in a two-cabin configuration featuring Delta’s award-winning BusinessElite service.

The new Amman service is one of a number of new transatlantic routes not served by any other major U.S. airline from JFK planned for 2008 including: Cairo*, Edinburgh, Lagos*, Malaga*, Dakar*, Cape Town** (via Dakar) and Nairobi* (via Dakar). Delta’s nonstop service between Amman and New York JFK will be the carrier’s second Middle Eastern destination, following the launch of Delta’s nonstop service between Dubai and Atlanta in June this year.

Delta Air Lines operates service to more destinations than any global airline with Delta and Delta Connection flights to 315 destinations in 54 countries. Since 2005, Delta has added more international capacity than all other major U.S. airlines combined and is a leader across the Atlantic with flights to 36 trans-Atlantic markets. To Latin America and the Caribbean, Delta offers nearly 400 weekly flights to 54 destinations.

Delta's marketing alliances also allow customers to earn and redeem SkyMiles on nearly 15,000 flights offered by SkyTeam and other partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services. Including its SkyTeam and worldwide codeshare partners, Delta offers flights to 477 worldwide destinations in 103 countries.

A portion of travel for some itineraries beyond New York JFK may be operated by the Delta Connection carriers: Comair, Freedom Airlines and Shuttle America.

"Travellers flying from Jordan will benefit from some 40 convenient connections throughout the United States and Canada to business and leisure destinations including Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Tampa and Washington. The new flight will also offer opportunities for freight forwarders and cargo shippers transporting commodities such as textiles.

On its inaugural flight, Delta will sponsor and transport internationally acclaimed art exhibition, Breaking the Veils: Women Artists from the Islamic World. The exhibit includes 71 works of art from 51 women representing more than 20 Islamic countries, including Indonesia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq is scheduled to tour ten U.S. cities. The debut will take place during a gala reception at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 20. Delta is the official airline sponsor for the Tour which is presented by The ArtReach Foundation, an Atlanta-based non-profit. Breaking the Veils, inaugurated in 2002 by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, of Jordan, was organized by Her Royal Highness Princess Wijdan Al Hashemi, Ph.D., President of the Royal Society of Fine Art, Jordan, and the Pan Mediterranean Women Artists Network (F.A.M.) of Greece. An evening reception under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Rajwa bint Ali will be held on Tuesday 3 June at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts to honor Delta as the Official airline sponsor for the U.S. Tour.

Charaf added: "We are proud to commemorate our new non-stop service from Amman to New York by transporting a truly historic exhibition of Islamic art and given our position as a global corporation, fully support cultural events that reflect the interests of our customers." Delta's nonstop service between Amman and New York will be a two class service with 215 seats, 34 seats in Delta's award winning BusinessElite class and 181 seats in economy. Delta's BusinessElite service features all-leather sleeper seats with 152 cm of legroom, innovative food offerings from celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein and the airline's on-demand personal in-seat entertainment that boasts more than 20 first-run and popular classic movies, a variety of TV programs, a broad range of music, and a suite of 12 video games. Economy class customers also benefit from new all-leather economy seats, amenity kits and enhanced food offerings. Delta's flight will have English and Arabic speaking flight attendants onboard, as well as offer Halal food options.

On arrival, Delta customers can also take advantage of Delta's Helicopter service (operated by US Helicopter) - which provides an eight-minute trip between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Manhattan. Helicopter rides are complimentary for customers booked with qualifying international BusinessElite fares while customers travelling in economy can also purchase return tickets.
