How the hell does one vote on the "densest Southern city"? One word: Census.

That being said, why isn't Miami, my choice, on the list?

I am fairly sure that none of those cities are the densest. I would think Miami, New Orleans, Richmond, Louisville (pre-merger), and Memphis are the densest. Probably in that order too. I am too lazy to look it up :) But you know the oldest cities that were the biggest around 1900 will be the densest in general.

Cities like Atlanta, Nashville, and Charlotte are way behind when it comes to density bc they are brand new cities. Furthermore, Nashville and Charlotte still have urban areas below 700k!! I believe New Orleans, Richmond, and Louisville have much higher Urban Areas even though they are generally considered smaller.

My vote goes to New Orleans. It is extremely walkable, between downtown, the Riverfront, Uptown, the French Quarter, and many others. Downtown is very active during the day, and tourists fill many other areas of the city. And of course at night, New Orleans' nightlife is hard to beat in the South.

In terms of population density, New Orleans' urban area population in 2000 was about 1.1 million people in 198 sq miles of land, which is pretty dense. For comparison purposes(all populations in a 600 sq. mile area), Miami had 3.8 million, Dallas had 3.0 million, Houston had 2.7 million, and Atlanta had 1.9 million

And in terms of urban density, New Orleans is also very dense. Check this out, Link

It's most dense, and none of the cities on that list are particularly dense.
Atlanta would be the "most dense," but, the cities listed are all big suburban style cities, nothing remotely close to true urban grit and density. Miami, Charleston, SC, New Orleans, and some coastal Floridian resorts are about the only places in the entire South where you will find true density.

Let's be honest, this is DENSE (corner to corner is about 45 miles):

New Orleans is the 5th most densely populated city in the country. And more dense than any city on that list. At least, used to be. :) Here's the link
Truth be told, I think New Orleans is more dense than pre-Katrina, and certainly Metairie is...at least comparing, now, where most people live...it's more dense than before because many haven't returned to flooded areas, but, are living in areas that did not flood. There are FEMA trailors on practically every vacant spot of land in New Orleans and a great deal of Metairie and Kenner.

i'd have to say new orleans. maybe not by physical population numbers but as a built environment.

Cati-corner to corner is what I'm measuring JMancuso. I live Uptown, and it is exactly 21 miles to the airport from my house via the interstate. My house is right in the middle of the big crescent.
