Derby City Council and St James Securities have announced that the new performance venue will be built as part of the Becketwell redevelopment scheme. It will be a 3,500 capacity venue and will be "a fully flexible space, capable of staging shows, comedy acts, bands and conferences, with secondary space of up to 400 capacity and is scheduled for completion in 2024" - quoting from the Derby Telegraph.
It will be located on the site of the former Pink Coconut nightclub, NCP car park and Laurie House. Looks like it includes a new multi storey car park.
There aren’t any plans as yet but the council report says it needs to be demolished as soon as possible and also to include the car park. Mentions some temporary uses such as as extending the ‘event’ capabilities of the market space, a park or pop up uses.
for me there is a real risk that nothing really comes of the site for decades. The market place needs animation with active uses on all sides . Would love the idea of a decent hotel though .
Following from the demolition of the old Debenhams building there is now the detailed planning application for the apartment building (application reference 20/01076/RES):
Erection of building providing 259 residential units (Use Class C3) together with internal and external resident amenities, car parking and servicing plus two commercial units at ground floor level (Use Class E)
Some fantastic aerial shots of the on-going demolition. The pictures really give a sense of the sheer scale of this site and project. Also, I've heard that a reserved matters planning app is expected for the arena this summer.
