Derbyshire Royal Infirmary Redevelopment, Derby

It appears this initial proposal was either refused by the planners or fell foul of the financial crash. Later plans have been approved though (see post 3).

Developer: NHS
Use: Medical, residential, office, hotel, retail and educational
Building heights: 4 to 14 storeys.
Area: Castleward/Eastern Fringes

Derbyshire Royal infirmary shall cease to operate from 2009 following the move of most of the departments to the new Derby City Hospital elsewhere in the city. 75% of the hospital will be abandoned and the NHS have come up with a masterplan for its redevelopment.

Due to the speculative nature of the development, information and imagery is limited until further details are revealed. From the image shown it appears very little of the existing site will remain, with the exception of Wilderslowe House and the domed structures of the original hospital buildings. The heights increase towards the Westfield development, with a large 14 storey building.

The development does not fit in with the Derby City Council/Cityscape vision for the area, and may not be approved.

Seriously, I can see this densifying as it develops and the ring road needs to be pacified here like Traffic Street and Bradshaw Way retail park needs to become a city square. Oh so many ands....Where are the route...how do you cycle or walk from Arboretum through to Bass Rec!

I hear they have broken ground on this project now. Bit of a selfish request, but has anyone local passed by recently and seen how it's coming along ? Thank you.
