I recently completed an indepth analysis of Detroit's white flight. The data that I found was very interesting. Detroit's white population has declined 94% since its peak in 1950. This kind of sharp decline suggests that paranoia swept over the white community and almost all left. As of 2000 there were less than 100,000 whites left in Detroit and still leaving fast.

Whites in Detroit:
1900:282,000--(98.6%)
1910:460,000--(98.7%)
1920:952,000--(95.9%)
1930:1,449,000(92.4%)
1940:1,474,000(90.8%)
1950:1,546,000(83.4%)
1960:1,174,000(70.3%)
1970:821,000--(54.3%)
1980:402,000--(33.4%)
1990:208,000--(20.2%)
2000:99,921---(10.5%)
2010:0?

source: census.gov

So what do you think? Does the data point to a complete decline or will the white population comeback to Detroit in the future?

I would have put this in the United States urban issues section.

Aside from that, it is quite striking. Even in New York, there has not been such significant white flight. Unless I am mistaken, the percentage of caucasians hovers around ~45% of the city's population. This is also in part simply because New York City is such a huge immigrant destination, and most immigrants would not be characterized as primarily being of white ancestry.

^ no, if you notice the white graph line began to decline only after the black graph line started to rise. That means when blacks began to move in, the whites left and the blacks took over their homes.

It might have stagnated in the 1990s, but it was not growing much...I don't know. If it grew, it was because of natural increase, and not migration.

But since 2000, Detroit has not been declining only because of Whites. The city has supposedly dropped to 900,000 in 2004. The city has been losing more of the Black middle class to the suburbs.

^ not according to that graph. The graph is not showing the percentage, but total population numbers.
True, but if you look closely to the line before last it shows a slight drop which marks the slight decline that occured. During the 90's Detroit's black population declined for the first time in its history from 775,000 to 772,000.

Actually, Detroit's white population will eventually see a turning point, as "traditional whites" have all but moved out while hispanics and arabs continue to move in. There are no more "white" neighborhoods in the city so those that are there now are most likely staying. Southwest Detroit is the only area left in the city that has a significant white population and that's mainly because hispanics and arabs are categorized as "white". The rest are scattered throughout the city. And while the black population has started to decline, the hispanic population will most likely see it's share of the population double by the next census. In 2000, hispanics accounted for about 5% of the total population. By 2010, they could account for as much as 10% of the total population.

To say that these statistics suggest paranoia reads more into them than what is presented. I am not saying white people weren't paranoid, but you can't conclude that just by looking at that graph. And paranoia is still a rather strong judgement to pass on the mental states of more than a million people.

Though whites had been moving to the suburbs since the 40's and 50's, it was the '67 riots that was the tipping point. Prior to the '67 riots the city was a white city that had a large black population. After the riots the city was a black city that had a large white population. I think that if the riots hadn't happened the city would have psychologically remained a "white" city with a large black population in the same way cities like Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. were.

Who cares about Black and White, all I see from that graph is that Detroits population has declined by almost a million people in the last 60 or so years. That's insane. Is that accurate?

Yes, that's accurate. Detroit's population has declined from 1,850,000 in 1950 to 951,000 in 2000. 2004 estimates put its population at around 900,000.

Could one make a compelling agument that metropolitan Detroit will remain dysfunctional until racism ceases to be an issue in America?

If you look closely at the graph, you'll notice that the white population is larger than the total population until about 1911 ;)
