Detroit's lost buildings.

Is there a list of buildings demolished in Detroit? I just came across this picture only to find out it was demolished in 1998. What takes it's place now? If nothing, why is Detroit hell bent on demolishing it's history and replacing it with nothing? I know here in Toronto we tore down many a building in the name of progress (a real shame) but I can't think of any building here or other cities that are torn down without just cause. What's going on with your old railway building, and is there any chance of saving it?

That was the old Hudson's department store, once the second largest department store in the U.S. It was demolished in 1998 because at the time it was considered too much of a project to ever be renovated. Today the site is home to an underground parking garage with supports for a future tower at ground level.
Here are some buildings I know of off hand that you should look up. I own old postcards of them that I can scan if you want.

Fort Street Union Station, Statler Hotel, Tuller Hotel, St. Clair Hotel, Madison-Lenox Hotel. There was also a gorgeous castle-like post office though I don't know if you can find anything about it online.

This was a beautiful old Albert Kahn designed home in Brush Park that was literally falling apart.
The City of Detroit had ordered a demolition permit for the beloved Michigan Central Station, but some people are filing lawsuits against the city to stop them from doing it. So, I'm not sure what the status is. I don't think the city even owns it. A guy named Matty Maroun owns it. However, it is still standing.
Tiger stadium........... The park i got to grow up in while Jacobs field was selling out in the 90's...... There would be more Tribe fans then Tiger fans but I loved the atmosphere and all the history.... The dark caves that you walked thru till you got to your section then all you see is green grass and blue sky.
The Lafayette Building will be demolished soon...

That slum lord Dennis Kefallinos said he wants to redevelop it. So who knows.
What's the building you see when you take the I-94 west ramp from I-75 North? It looks like scene from Bagdadh. Is that the Fisher Body?
I think you might be referring to Fisher Body 21.

It's located at the corner of Piquette and St. Antoine. It was built in 1919 and was part of a larger complex.

How's that redvelopment going? ;)
I really really wish they find a new use for MCS

either as a mixed use condo/hotel, or convention center or as an office for int'l trade...i know the Detroit Police are looking for a new home....it might bring some badly needed investment to that area
Does anyone know of this building.. I believe its a hotel and its probly near 25 stories and it is a very thin building

You said it, man, this building is too historic and too big to be put on the wrecking ball. Maybe if the city could afford some kind of light rail system, that could be used as a hub.
It's too far from the CBD to be used is a viable light rail hub. The current Rosa Park Transit station is probably the best option. All the major spoke roads (Woodward, Grand River, Gratiot, Michigan, Fort, and Jefferson) come together right there. MCS would work very well as a casino/hotel. The large base would make for a great casino floor and the upper levels are ideal for hotel rooms. They could even give it an Irish theme since it is in Corktown.;)
no neither of those to buildings hudkina... those are to big to be it.... this is like a run down motel sorta place (atleast thats how it looked in pics)..... its probly 20 stories tall or under and a very thin/narrow building
