Chinese Companies to Build Industrial Zone in Dire Dawa

Addis Ababa: May 7, 2014 (FBC) - Ministry of Industry and four Chinese companies signed on Tuesday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build an industrial zone in Dire Dawa.

The industrial zone would be the biggest ever zone in Africa, according to China’s Ambassador in Ethiopia Xie Xiaoyan. The companies that signed the agreement to engage in building various industries are China Railway Group Limited, China Communication Construction Company, China Civil Engineering Construction Company, and CCG Overseas Construction.

On the occasion, Ethiopian Ambassador to China Seyoum Mesifn said the agreement shows the landmark achievements of the two countries cooperation and the special attention given to industrial transformation.

The ambassador appreciated the Chinese commitment to engage in various industrial zones in Ethiopia.

The Chinese Ambassador in Ethiopia Xie Xiaoyan on his part said the agreement is a reflection of the two nation’s commitment for development and this is the first economic tie in Africa and many more steps to follow.

After the signing of the memorandum, MoI State Minister Sisay Gemechu said the agreement is based on an earlier agreement reached by the two prime ministers following their discussion in the capital.

I have always said Dire Dawa would become a major industrial city because of its position on the railroad.
Yea I remember when you used to say Dire Dawa will become an industrial hub. To add to what you said I was watching ETV by chance and I heard one of the officials of Dire say that they are already looking into prospect of special economic zone.

I remember we have discussed this before. It took the Chinese a while between stating their interest in building an industrial zone in DD (back in 2012) and signing MoU. Hope it will take less to start the actual work. SelenDawa has started early and it seems things are moving in the right direction for the city.

china is willing to invest big in Ethiopia, because they understand the ultra-low cost of the Ethiopian workers, the very cheap energy, the strategic position of the country (next to the red sea) the low value of the Ethiopian birr, the political stability, the strong diplomatic relationship an the Chinese model that the Ethiopian gov. is following.

Ethiopia is set to inaugurate on Sunday a new industrial park in its eastern region, which is expected to create about 40,000 jobs for Ethiopians.

Stretched on 14,500 hectares of land, Dire Dawa industrial park will have 15 industrial sheds ready to accommodate prospective investors once it's fully commissioned.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the Chinese-built industrial park on Sunday, according to state affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate.

Dire Dawa industrial park constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) at a cost of 51 million U.S. dollars, is expected to host investors in textile and leather sectors, and construction input sectors, reported FBC.

Speaking to Xinhua recently, Zhu Lei, Deputy Manager of the Industrial Parks Group under the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Ethiopia Office, said the industrial park has environmentally friendly waste discharge system.

Zhu further said CCECC has already constructed and commissioned Hawassa, Kombolocha and Adama industrial parks, while it has completed 70 percent of construction work for Bahir Dar industrial park.

CCECC was also a co-constructor of the 4 billion U.S. dollars Ethiopia-Djibouti electrified rail line which started commercial operations earlier this year.

Was about to attend this inauguration until it was cancelled last minute. Seems to have been due to some security concerns.
