I use to live in those appartments - the views are really great, but the wind is so bad that opening your windows is not an option. They have a great garden, huge pool, tennis courts, braai area, day care, laundry, 24 hour security. I lived in the one on the left hand side. Those views are stunning.

The Grand entrance halls to each of these buildings have Exotic Wood framed windows from ceiling to floor with 306 views, Stone floors and have big indoor gardens below a spiral wooden staircase that leads up to the floor above. The lifts are behind a curved wall.

I'll stop ranting ... here are a few pics:

I do know that lots of the appartments are privately owned and some floors are also owned by estate agencies. It would be a nightmare to try and purchase this complex I think, but it would look so lovely if it had a revamp. Through the years people considered painting this in various colours, but I would imagine that if it those old windows were replaced by glass sheets that are the colour of recycled glass (greenish) that it might look more at home on the mountain and perhaps tiles of stone the colour of the mountain rock?

There would be no need to make windows that open because it will be a waste of money and time, but airconditioning is a must because the sun bakes into each appartment like crazy turning every flat into a hell hole.

Each floor has two bach. Flats facing the mountain and then 6 other flats ranging from 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom flats.

I'm ranting again arent I? I'll stop.

So this is CT's version of JHB's Ponte? Except these round buildings were split into 3 rather than 1 tall tower. Looks like the wind factor wouldn't allow a tallie. Also sticks out like a sore thumb but then being against the mountain face rather than further down the slopes was better.

What sort of Development Approval processes happened in the 70's to allow such a development? So much was built in such a few number of years. Think ZA was mini-Dubai then. And they have also come to a crashing halt..

See what the next few years brings.
So that's what these three buildings are...
^^ In Cape Town, they are loathingly known as "The Tampon Towers."
I know, but i never seen a tampon with such sharp edges. I hope that if anyone does ever revamp this place that they extend the cladding higher so that it hides the lift and garbage shafts that stick out the top making it look like a toilet roll holder. I think that the finish is rubbish, but I like them. It is so part of Cape Town - just like the castle and mountain.

It would suck to be in there in the summer, truly.

Well, to be honest ... there is no way you can sleep late on a Saterday or Sunday morning. It gets SO HOT, that you are forced to leave your appartment by about 8:30-9am and only return home after the sun has gone. People used all kinds of things to reflect the sun back out ... silver blinds, specialy lined curtains - you name it.
maybe with a decent refurb those buildings could move away from being an eye-sore for so many and help the residence inside. Such a good view and in front of the most iconic mountain in the world. Sure someone could work with that.
