I think it was channel 3.
It was great. Showed helicopters, car chases, city from above and the like...
Basically it was helicopters chasing new Toyota camry through the city.

I don't think its on internet anywhere...

Not exactly...

61 Molesworth Street

or is it built
It's a planned extension to an existing 60s office tower: it won't go any higher, I don't think, but expands the tower to use up more of the podium space.

Interestingly, the Architectural Centre is against it. The original ICI house is not exactly a historic gem, but it was the result of a careful architectural and urban planning exercise that limited the massing to make it respond better to the adjacent cathedral. It's a fairly standard curtain-walled office building, but as a result of the planning it has quite good proportions. All that's about to be thrown away for an ill-considered extension that will sacrifice elegance in the name of maximising rental space. :eek:hno:

On a more positive note, I've heard a few more things about the "Serepisos Tower". While it will have a mast that makes it really tall, the highest occupied floor will be at least as high as top of the Majestic Centre. My contact says it's being designed by a respected corporate architect, and he also says there is some really nice balcony detailing. Some floors will only have a single apartment, so if you can imagine a tower the height of the Majestic centre but much, much slimmer, you can see that even if it's not supertall, it should look like a real skyscraper :)

Other sites to watch: the small vacant space behind Stewart Dawsons Corner (Lambton & Willis, near Plimmer Steps) and the old Il Casino (corner of Tory & Jessie).

The only problem with having the tallest building in such a place is that you won't be able to noticed much of it. If you're in oriental bay the HSBC building is mostly blocked by that brown/bronze one I cant remember the name of. So you willl just see the top few floors of this new tallest building.

That brown/bronze building would be the Intercontinental Hotel...I think.:)

There's no info on the Century City site as yet, but it sounds promising. :)

*There's also the space between those two 1960s concrete lumps on Willis St, opposite Chews Lane.

*I've also noticed the produce market on the Willis-Vivian corner is effectively vacant. Although there's a Wash 'n' Shop outlet there right now, it seems to be a by-word for "soon to be developed". For that matter, any car park that looks like it's wasting space is free advertising for development potential.

*There's another vacant spot next to the McKenzies Building where the bypass enters the city, which appears to have been paved over.

*And I wonder what's going to happen with the old Caltex station on Wakefield St?

Once I find my camera, or buy another one, I'll be on the case again.

Is that Serepisos tower being built on Lambton Quay or Willis Street.
Apparently it's going to be near Cable Car Lane.

I've heard that there have been several plans for this, including one with several narrow towers: that one seems to be progressing quite seriously. So the produce market might not be round much longer :-( I always hoped that it could be developed with some sort of London-style covered market on the ground floor and apartments above, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen.

No idea! It's such a waste of space, and now that the Piermont/Monument apartments are going up next door, surely it's potential will have to be realised soon. As usual, I'm a bit of a utopian urbanist and hope that whatever development goes ahead includes some sort of public passage through the middle of the block (e.g. a pedestrian street from Wakefield to Cable St), but I doubt any developer would allow that to happen if it means less floor space to sell!

Yes, I've heard that it'll be on the tiny sliver of land behind Hallensteins House, or just north of there. If you sneak around the carparks of the buildings on the Terrace (near the Novotel), you can see a gap there that could conceivably fit a building.

Is the height given (highest floor at least 116m) above the ground it will be on, or the height over lambton quay?

If the highest floor will be at least as high as the majestic centre does this mean it is at least 116m from lambton quay or at least 116m from the ground it is sitting on, which will be higher ground due to a sloped site being between the terrace and lambton quay.

Easy way to put this - will the actual building be at least 116m or will it just appear to be higher due to the possibility of it being on a sloped site?

That would be a great spot for such a tall building as it would even out the Lambton end of the skyline a bit more with the Willis end which already has the Majestic and State Insurance buildings.I wonder if Serepisos has gotten any kind of approval from the council. Obviously he wouldn't have resource consent, but it's hard to believe he would be hiring architects etc. unless he believed there is agood chance the project would get approved. One thing we can be certain of is that there will be some selfish residents moaning about their views being stolen.

It's at the "pre-application" stage at the moment, where he & his architects are discussing it semi-formally with the council planners. I think they're fairly warm to the idea :)
