It may seem boring, but I've read somewhere on this site before that Wellington is actually under-served in terms of supermarkets per capita. And I'm sure we can all agree that having a Countdown near the biggest of those New Worlds you listed is good for our grocery budgets
Under-served you reckon? I think Auckland might win that one, at least in the central city. There's only 1 or 2 supermarkets in Aucklands cbd and nothing in the surrounding suburbs of Parnell, Kingsland, Newton or Ponsonby.
Anyway, I just think it's a waste of prime space. I take your point about competition though, Chaffers NW is pretty dam pricey.

Yeah, and Auckland being more underserved doesn't negate the need in Wellington, there's not really any connection there. Or maybe we just need more South East Asian Night Markets like tonight! I could quite happily go and buy halo-halo and bbq pork fresh off the bbq a few more nights of the year
You think that's bad. They're building another petrol station near Vivian/Cuba. Because what we really need to improve traffic flow on "SH1" is another place people are leaving and entering traffic.

Waterfront Wellington is calling for developers to come up with new designs for its Kumutoto precinct.
New plans have to comply with a new Wellington City Council design brief.
This includes keeping one site opposite Whitmore St clear to protect view shafts through to the harbour.
The maximum height on site 10, at the northern end of the area, was reduced to 22 metres, while site 9's was lowered to 19m, and 16m at its south end.
New buildings in this area would have a range of uses and could include recreational, retail, commercial, residential and institutional uses. The uses needed to support a safe waterfront and 24-hour activity.
The brief said the character of North Kumutoto included a network of waterfront promenade and lanes connecting back to the CBD.
Any new buildings would have to be sympathetic to the scale of the surrounding heritage buildings including Shed 21 at the northern end, Sheds 11 and 13 at the southern end, the Former Eastbourne Ferry Building and the Harbour Board iron gates and raiilings.

I'd say ripping up the fuel tanks of the old Shell station would have been too much bother, so they turned it into a Z station instead.
Ah, I forgot about that. Makes sense.

I suppose making the supermarket a mixed-use zone, like the New World Metro on Willis or the proposed New World Ghuznee, would reduce the space wastage. As far as I'm aware, Countdown don't have any experience in that field.

It's a pity. I wouldn't have minded it serving as an ongoing example of how badly wrong you can go when renovating historic buildings.

"An estimated $35 million is being spent adding five or six floors to the top of the long-vacant old Enza head office in Bolton St and converting it into a 130-room hotel across the road from the five-star Bolton Hotel. It is scheduled to open in mid-2014."
It looks like the cranes are going up, so construction should start soon

Probaby no need for a new thread. Separate project threads only work if people update them on a regular basis, but this whole Wellington forum is pretty dead so maybe just the occasional update in this thread will be sufficuent.

I mean, I'll put up a new thread for the new Countdown when the renders go up. For the hotel, I'll grab some location photos and start a thread towards the end of the weekend.

Another thanks to dmanww - this thread is nowhere nearly as busy as it should be.
Obviously development isn't booming (nor is public transport for example) but there isn't a lot in the way of fluff either - for example the restaurants/retail threads AKL have.
Will the Sofitel be reclad? It's pretty dated and ugly. What's the latest from the Hilton group?

Hey guys, have been browsing this forum for several years now thought it was time to sign up.

Also had a look at the WCC resource consents and it apppears that someone has been issued consent to build a new fuel facility opposite the proposed Countdown (221 Wakefield St) directly infront of Te Papa and 200m away from a BP station. wtf?
