Do we have a speed limit on the bikeways?

As per subject. Just curious, I know some shared areas have one.

I would assume, or the logical thing to be is that it would be the same as for cars.

ie. 50km/h in non signed areas (which i suppose all bike ways are probably non-signed so i assume it would be 50km/h everywhere).

They treat bikes like vehicles for drink driving, so logically you would assume they would be treated the same for speeding.

There isn't typically a set speed for bikes (unless signed around heavily pedestrianised areas), but it's quite hard to get too much beyond 30km/h - 40km/h on a flat stretch anyway.

Occassionally, going downhill on some streets, I get up to about 50km/h, but its fairly in line with what cars are doing as well.

There is no legal speed restrictions on bicycle speeds unless signed.

The problem being, of course, that bicycles have no way of measuring their speed.

I would not be game to travel as fast as 50km/h as I would not trust my brakes if I had to stop very quickly
The story bridge has a 20km/h limit for cyclists, as does the floating walkway below.
I assume (not a bike rider often, I do have a speedo though) that these are signed though?

Unlike streets if unsigned the max is 50kph etc...
Yes they are signed. Stuff going at only 20km/h though. Once you get speed and momentum on a bike, it's a pain in the ass to have to slow down and start over again. So usually if I see a speed limit, and its not in a heavily pedestrianised area, I will ignore it.

How do you know what speed you are doing on your bike?
For me 2 ways, the digital speedo that came with the bike, think its called cat eye, and sometimes the GPS when its charged..

I have a 'bike computer'...tells time, distance, speed, avg. speed etc. Plus I also use Nokia SportsTracker, which tracks my rides via GPS and produces a map of it, as well as all the relevant data.

Bloody hell, what are they worth, I don't ride too much but one of them would be handy.

You can also get fined for not ringing your bell when passing other cyclists or pedestrians.

Bike computers usually range from about $35 for a cheaper model (still does all the basics you need - speed, time, distance), anywhere up to probably around $200 for a computer that will do a whole lot more - including heart rate, grade of hills, lap times etc. They are really worth getting, even if you don't use your bike a lot. The brand I have is a Sigma, that cost about $90.

If you want Nokia SportsTracker - all you need is a Nokia phone that has a GPS receiver, and you can download the program for free off the Nokia BetaLabs website. Website

Bells are compulsory on all new bikes I believe. It is common courtesy to let pedestrians know you're coming.

I have a bike computer. It's extremely helpful, even if only to see how far I'm riding (I ride every day).

Mine cost $80. It's a wireless model (little transmitter attached to the spokes, and a little screen on the handlebars. No messy cable). Doesn't do hill grades and heart rate, but pretty much everything I'm likely to ever need is on there. Speeds, times, distances etc.

Mine's wireless too. I think one with cables would just get annoying.
Do we have a speed limit on the bikeways?
just a guess, but probably can't go faster then the speed of light.
What if you were on a train travelling at the speed of light and you rode down the passageway towards the front of the train?

Any idea how fast the speed of light is?
299792458 meters per second, but that is a vacuum or in space...which is a vacuum. Hence you would need a spacesuit and i dont think you could ride a bike down the ailse of a train in a space suit.
