Love the DR...used to go several times a year. Haven't been back in years.

My all-time favorite place was Sosua...such an interesting little place....the kind of place Hemingway would hang out. Founded by jews. Fantastic public beach...sort of bohemian feel to the place...lots of bars, stores and restaurants along tree-lined narrow streets. Lots of Canadian ex-pats living there. Also had some very classy discos (the kind you actualy dress up to go to).

Fond memories of having a drink at the Marco Polo restaurant overlooking Sosua Bay....snorkaling off Playa Sosua (great all-afternoon service by little entrepreneurial kids at the beach)...playing backgammon, drinking and merengeying up in thos little tree-house like clubs.

Soasua is also nicely located on the north shore...rent a motorbike and zip over to Puerto Plata or to Cabarete to watch some world class windsurfing.

Oh...and the rum...VERY good stuff.
