Dongguan Metro is the metro system under construction of the city of Dongguan in Guangdong Province of China. Line R2 first section's construction began in 2010 and it is expected to be open by 2015 with 15 stations.

It looks like Dongguan was late to the game in getting a subway system for their big city. I'm glad to see they're getting a system going. Hopefully one day Dongguan will become as well known as Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau as one of the major Pearl River Delta cities.

You can just take transit from Hong Kong to Guangzhou.

Even connecting the metro systems of Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou and Hongkong as well. Probably one the biggest network of subway/metro systems in the world... :)

Macau is currently constructing its LRT. I think Zhongshan and Zhuhai, cities adjacent to Macau are also busy constructing their metro systems and expanding the CRH and standard railways as much as the other side of the Pearl River Delta is doing for years.

Dongguan will never be as famous as those cities. Dongguan will always be overshadowed because it's functioning as a big suburb or cityburb to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

I've never seen an group of cities so well connection(now) as the cities in the PRD and it's only improving. You can even fly from HKG to CAN.

Being in the U.S. I keep comparing the size of Chinese cities to the cities here. It's hard to think that a city of 8.2 million people(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dongguan) as a city that's not well known worldwide.

Bottom line, I love seeing the progress made in China. After my visit in 2010 what I saw was really great infrastructure wise.

No one in their right mind flies between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, unless they're making connections. And even then it's cheaper to merely use land transport.

Being in the U.S. I keep comparing the size of Chinese cities to the cities here. It's hard to think that a city of 8.2 million people(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dongguan) as a city that's not well known worldwide.

I almost did it because I wanted to get a chance to fly China Southern during my visit to China. :) True, this keyboard I'm typing on could have easily been made in Dongguan. :cheers:

^^ I do forgot that Foshan metro/subway system is also connected to Guangzhou metro. :lol:

Meaning that should be Guangzhou-Foshan-Shenzhen-Dongguan-Hongkong-Zhuhai-Zhongshan-Macau integrated metro system.

I saw a recent map somewhere that the east side of Pearl river is also planning now metro connections - so you can halve circle just by subway lines.
but don't forget the north-east city of Huizhou - also connectet to Shenzhen subway.
and finally not the Express Railways systems - like commuter railways. operated u.C. or planned.
this area is on the way to be the largest populated urban area with the best railwaysystem.
unfortunatel on the express railways it is very difficult to find maps - not on full Guangdong province.

CHINA: CSR Nanjing Puzhen is to supply 20 six-car trainsets for the future Dongguan Rail Transit metro Line R2.

The 860m yuan contract signed on June 26 requires the first train to be delivered by the end of December 2013, with all 20 to arrive by February 2015, in time for the scheduled opening of the line.

Dongguan Rail Transit has opted for Type B trains, which it feels are most suitable for a 'second tier' city. The aluminium-bodied six-car sets will have a capacity of 1200 passengers, with four motor and two trailer cars and a top speed of 120 km/h. Bombardier Transportation and New United Group will supply CSR Nanjing Puzhen with Mitrac propulsion and control equipment under a 102m yuan contract.

Construction of the 37 km Line R2 from Shilong to Humen Coach Terminal with 14 stations began in January 2011. It is intended as the first phase of a planned four-line network which would total 194·4 km and 55 stations.

hi - go to wikipedia.com - then to Guangzhou metro - then to the Chinese version which includes much more information then the english one! - and then to english translation of the website by google or other - must installed previous.
then you find below a overview on all Chinese metros and can go there with links to their official web sites - same procedure as above > engl. translation of the web - not to the possible English button if offered!
