It's all just about updating an ancient law (compared to the time digital technology has been around) that would have never been enforcable in the first place with regard to stopping ripping of CDs for personal use to something that makes more sense.

It also gives record companies less reason to use copy protection that is sometimes plain unreliable (let's not mention the Sony BMG fiasco).
