The Roses Design Awards ware being held in Nottingham this year and I am looking for entrants from all projects, designers and architects in the UK outside the M25 in the past year.

East Midlands designs in particular are being encouraged to enter and win to promote and boost the region, with particular emphasis towards Nottingham gaining world design capital status. So should the Pod get the nod? Is the De Lux picture perfect? What are the most significant new builds in the region?

Amongst the categories up for grabs are: Interior Design, Best Residential Project, Best Affordable Housing Project, Best Re-Use of a Listed Building, Best Commercial Project, Best Public Building, Best Regeneration, Best Placemaking, Best Proposed Building, Best Low Cost Project, Engineering Design and Sustainable Design.

An expert panel of acclaimed architects and writers have been assembled to judge the event, chaired this year by Ian Simpson, director of Ian Simpson Architects. Joining Simpson are a several leading architects including: Peter Wilson (Napier University), Julian Gitsham (Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios), Hanif Kara (Adams kara Taylor), Kirsten Lees (Grimshaw Architects), Luigi Beltrandi (CZWG Architects LLP), Rafael Marks (Penoyre & Prasad LLP) and Paul Appleton (Allies and Morrison).

I look forward to reading any suggestions people may have, full details are available at www.rosesdesignawards.com.

Erm - "with particular emphasis towards Nottingham gaining world design capital status".

Well if that is the case, I nominate St George's Tower in Leicester. That should help Nottingham's campaign. The Curve, John Lewis's and Cinema de Lux are not worth entering for this...

Can you ask Ian Simpson about his tower in Leicester, if you see him around? Cheers.

This must be the famed 'Rose Tinted Glasses Awards'..
Haha, typical Leicester! Nottingham is the only UK city going for the world design capital, so its good that other organisations are getting behind it. As for nominations...:

The Pod- Nottingham should deffo go in for the Best Commericial Project

Meadows Gateway- Nottingham Best Proposed Building (or maybe Eastside?)

The Cube- Derby- Best Public Building

Litmus- Nottingham- Best Residential Building

Eastside-Nottingham Best Regeneration

Jubilee Campus/Innovation Park- Best sustainable design

The Curve would deffo also be in the running for best public building. Since CCAN/Nottingham Contemporary isnt open yet, ive not included that. Best Commercial project could also consider John Lewis in Leicester as well in that category.

Anyone got any other suggestions for these or the other categories?

Is it sponsored by Experian?
Seriously, I'm sure it will be fair.... although i'll take that back if Trinity Sq. wins anything.
Nope, its sponsored by major international deisgn magazines like Prospect, The Drum and others like brahm, adforum.com. Greater Nottingham Partnership and investinnottingham.com also sponsor since they got the event to be hosted here.

As for entrants, its states it as being any project built outside the M25 or anything designed by someone based outside the M25 but even build abroad. Stop being so cynical Leicestarians! :p
If we are applying for European City of Design, or whatever it is, I think we will have to get used to sniffy Londoners and rival provincial cities saying "What does Nottingham think it is - Milan?" It's exactly the same thing as when people derided Liverpool for being the European Capital of Culture ahead of Rome and London and Paris and wherever, but they all seem to have had a great time in their year.

The City of Design thing is not about having the most elegant, beautiful or architectually pioneering city, it's about celebrating all aspects of design, including architecture, but also graphics, fashion, engineering and product design. It's as much about Paul Smith and the Raleigh Chopper (two Nottingham design classics) as it is about our architectural gems like Trinity Square and Broadmarsh.

Incidentally, Pharmj, you have some balls to put Eastside up as Best Regeneration!:) Best derelict patch of land maybe...

Nottingham as a creative city- please vote

www.thedrum.co.uk

then scroll 2/3 down the page

Please vote for nottingham and show the drum readers we do have something to offer.
I voted for Manchester, although I was torn between that and Newcastle to be honest.
Where is Leicester - which was voted the second most creative city in the country a few years ago?

I voted "Other".
Who voted Leicester 2nd most creative!? Leicester Mercury readers? Give me a break.

I love the blind jealousy that seeps from Leicester whenever Nottingham gets a mention and Leicester doesnt, its really predictable
Perhaps from one or two people pharmj, but how about you stop generalising in your childish ways, because I think you'll find your argument also goes the other way from time to time.

Anyway, I didn't vote for Nottingham - not out of pettiness - but out of my firm belief that Manchester and Newcastle are far more creative Cities right now. It's a poll for opinion, I voted based on mine, get over it and move on.

As for Lears - he's a proud man and one of the few who care about Leicester enough to argue our case, so how about you give him a break instead of crying for one yourself?
I did criticise either of you for who you voted for at all.

Its entirely up to you, you presumed I voted for Nottingham as well, which would also be false.

I was just answering to the point that there has been nothing but negativity from Leicester forumers on every single Nottigham forum for months and its dull now. This thread was set up to promote design and architecture accross the EM. In fact, the guy who set it up wants 'East Midlands designs in particular' The fact its being hosted here appears to have really got some people's backs up..is all im saying.

I am not trying to criticise anyone at all, since I dont know any of u, that would hardly be fair
I understand your point pharmj, but you must also realise that other Nottingham users are exactly the same in most Leicester threads. If you cannot see it, it doesn't mean we can't - and vice versa aswell I suppose.

Considering you're not trying to criticise anybody your previous post was a little harsh!

Anyway, it's only the internet and i'm not trying to hold Lears' hand.. he'd have me arrested i'm sure. But there's no need to be so generalistic with your bashing of Leicester - we're not all bad ;)
I don't know, soon as the football season starts the rivalry on this forum starts.

i've mellowed these days, plus i don't want to get an essay from Danz

So good luck Nottingham and i'm sure you wish us all the best with our bids.

And no Bingethink i'm not being sarcastic.
hehe, oh i know matey...i guess maybe since i dont post much on the leicester threads, i dnt see the comments made there v often.

i guess the recession means we have very little development to talk about though, lol

Thats true, i'm bored ! lets get some Gloucester v Leicester rivalry going on the sports thread. (only joking) but i'm sure the rugby fans could fill a few pages and good luck to them.
Leicester Tigers are the most successful sporting team in the East Midlands at this moment in time.

^^ completely agree, whilst I enjoy a little emidland rivalry and banter, it would nice to talk about competing development scheme - rather than petty bickering- if there were any to speak of that is :eek:hno:

It was a few years ago. When Leicester was supposedly the second most creative city. So it was a think-tank that said it, not Mockery readers. Nottingham came forth I think in the Index.

http://www.prospectleicestershire.co.uk/living-here/work/sectors/creative-industries

Just to let you know, that was why I was asking why Leicester wasn't on this list. I couldn't care less whether Nottingham, or any other city was.

Trust me, there is no jealousy on my part. I do love a bit of banter though.
