Land prices in Dhaka have been going up about 30% annually for the last 3 years...so I guess investing in Land is the easiest way to make money here.

Spoken like a sage. Yup, no easy path to make money. Unless of course one hits the jackpot (lottery, casino, etc.).

How about becoming a tutor for high school kids? This is what most university students in Pakistan do.

You kidding? That is a thriving business in Dhaka, tutoring, I mean, if you're willing to do it as a fulltime job (10~12 hours/day). The hours are lousy though because most tutoring is done after school.

Bringing laptops, camcorders,LCD tvs might be a good idea, cause they are highly priced here compared to other countries.

Importing garments from BD is a good idea too..I know some people who import BD garments in Dubai and make good money from it.

Question is:

Are they being brought in to Bangladesh legally, paying the requisite duties, fees, etc? One cannot expect to make good money, if these items are taken in, piece meal, as allowed for a traveller.

Theres prolly a very insignificant % tax on computers in Bangladesh, and as for LCD TVs,they cost alot less than sold at markets even if you pay all the duties.

There you go then. Import LCD TVs legally and sell them. :)
As far as TV assembly goes -- Rangs is already setting up facilities to assemble LCD TV's. Walton Electronics already assembles LCD TV and also fridges.

Given where one finds LCD display material and other parts(Probably from Taiwanese or Chinese wholesalers) and given the right pricepoint -- assembly could be a lucrative prospect IMHO.

This is not as complicated as one thinks it is. Most electronic items are made with modular parts these days. So -- other than final testing, assembly is as simple as screwing together parts such as Display Unit, tuner block, outer casing etc.

Bangladesh market penetration of LCD TV and basic fridge (165 liter or say 6 cu.ft. size) is incredibly low. So there is plenty of prospect for market penetration there.

As far as garments export goes -- I know a few folks who import garments from Bangladesh but they are mostly doing small lots (1-2 container a month) of Knit T-shirts (imprinted) plus some polo shirts. But it remains to be seen whether they're making a killing. If they are -- then they aren't telling me :)

I did that when I was a student

While there are some lesser known/popular brands of television and refrigerator made/assembled in Bangaldesh, such as Singer, Walton, how are they received? Do they sell well? From what I have seen folks there are very brand loyal and tend to identify to the well known ones ... Sony for television, Toyota for cars, etc.

Yes, I also know of some people here (US) mostly in NY, and west coast who are dabbling in garment imports but nothing big ... like you said, a few containers at a time. My question is how do they market their goods? (I've never talked shop with these folks)

^^ Well there are numerous small retail Bangladeshi owned store in NY-NJ areas that directly sell imported Textile in his/her store, so no need to really market themselves.

Ah, that answers my question. Do you know whether these stores are thriving or just merely eke out a living?
^^ Majority of them do better than "just merely eke out a living" while few that I know about are doing extremely well (no not related to anyone of them). After the whole textile thing they branched out to mini-supermarkets that sells Bangladeshi specialty products (shrimps & other fishes are big here) as well as product from elsewhere. By no means is this Easy money. A lot of work was done for those entrepreneurs to succeed.
