Eco-tourism and leisure cluster strategic
The eco-tourism/leisure cluster is “strategic”. Tourism projects that focus on environmental quality of place, tourism services and developments are now a priority. A formal government statement says the strategy for promoting and developing tourism and leisure activities should be one of generating further revenue that will contribute to balancing the trade deficit, create new jobs, and add value to national heritage and natural and cultural assets. The statement outlines a sector action plan that promises: simplified licensing procedures for all tourism operations; more and better information for individuals and businesses through upgraded and more timely data on existing resources; to redefine and re-evaluate sustainability indicators for the sector and improve monitoring and quality control of product offered; to drive forward the Douro Valley leisure development programme which includes policies and public investment programmes to turn the region into a quality tourism resource; to establish a national tourism and leisure sector human resources policy, define and implement this and implement joined-up training and professional qualification policies.
