Can this airport accommodate 747's as cargo capacity begins to increase
Can this airport accommodate 747's as cargo capacity begins to increase

What cargo capacity is it designed to handle? How much is it handling now, what about capacity for 747 to land there, if not possible you'd need to extend the runway. Anyone with an idea what length of runway is required for a 747 cargo plane and what's the length of the runway there currently

Yes, it can accommodate 747s.

The airport is heavily under utilized and is already falling apart. The locals want the government to expand it. One thing they fail to realize is that landing fees are earmarked for maintenance & expansion. Less flights means less revenue. I think what they mean to say is that the government should keep pumping in money while the facility is bleeding money. The Moi era is long gone. If it were up to me, I would close it down permanently and convert it into a military airbase.

I believe they have a point Eldoret will grow into kenya's air cargo hub but as you heard the airport is already growing old and they want an update just like in Kisumu... We dont need it as a military base laikipia is being expanded and it will cater all of kenya's airspace with new jets.

Military airbases are upgraded very differently from civilian. Military are done based on strategic location. Expanding Laikipia to cater for more jets is pretty counterproductive considering if an aggressor were to launch a preemptive strike on that airbase, you would end up with lots of planes you cant use to defend yourself with if the runways got bombed. Scattering the bases across the country with limited aircrafts would reduce the overall damage in the event of a first strike.

FYI, the people in that video are not asking for a refurbishment only but also an expansion. It's not gonna happen with the extreme low volume. How long did it take for KAA to build unit 4 at JKIA? That airport is already handling twice the designed capacity and the Greenfield project is still struggling to get construction funding. So I ask, where is the money coming from to prop up ELD? The day ELD nearly attains and/or surpasses it's capacity, then there would be a case to be made to invest billions in upgrading it. Till then, it's a bad investment.

True... but we have no enemies in kenya that would launch preemptive attack on us with our f-15s in laikipia and we have secret radar stations/ and Sam batteries hidden in areas near our borders..... Greenfield will get funding either from arab sheik or from the chinese these projects slowed down because its election year,, once we are done with that everything will pickup

There have been varying rumors as to what Kenya has as far the airforce is concerned.
Congress (America) and the Senate Foreign Committee will not authorize the sale of strategic military armory without the blessing of the administration and the ground assessment of the CIA. Trust me, if there are any F-15's in Kenya, they are wholly owned & operated by the US or NATO forces.

Yes, Kenya has enemies close to home than you can imagine... and yes, they would launch a preemptive strike given the chance. With the natural resources at stake, impromptu alliances could be formed to take over territory. Thankfully with the current global economy, military allegiances are as strong as eggshells, & they can be waived. The only way Kenya acquires F16's or F15's is by subcontracting the Israelis because they can arbitrarily supply the weapons & parts in defiance of the UN security council. Kenya has a dark cloud projected by Human Rights groups and practically prohibits the sale of the said weapons. The British have the Tornado and the French have the Rafael fighters that they are aggressively marketing to outside governments. Only thing is that they have to get authorization from NATO central command (USA) to do so.
Once Kenya seeks & prosecutes criminals indicted at the ICC, the sale of advanced weapons is a given.

Ha! this is the biggest joke ever.

Eldoret messed itself up with their dodgy politics.

Peris chepchumba was recently calling for the expulsion of all 'White men' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nf7hKH1vJo) from the rift valley yet she now wants investment in Eldoret? I think after 2008 it will take a brave man to have export depots there if you are not from the rift valley tribes. I think as kenyan's we need to learn to not bite the hand that feeds us.

Also just over 1 plane a day traffic is really not something to aspire to. Instead of calling for the govt to do this and that, they should come up with a campaign to make investments in the area attractive to all kenyans, especially those that are 'not accepted' in the rift valley..

This woman makes me sick to the core though..

We as Africans/Kenyans have to learn everything the hard way before we accept the ramifications. The Eldoret politicians & residents for a long while enjoyed the fruits of the Moi era with impunity. Now that the benefits of that era are slowly fading away, we get indignation that the rest of the country has to cough up millions/billions of shillings to prop up an airport not worth the land it's sitting on.
No more!
Those guys will have to wait till the JKIA Greenfield project & the Mombasa airport expansion program is complete before any money is pumped into that 'white whale".
Kenyan leaders always get their priorities wrong thats why Kenyans always suffer. Instead of building this white elephant they could have added a 2nd runway to JKIA or a new terminal. But this why they want to leaders of their tribe who will built huge projects that will never benefit the same people who keep on bragging and boosting of the same useless project
