EDMONTON - Oil Dome (18,500)

Katz Group is proposing a $450 million arena to be built by Edmonton based PCL Construction. The primary tenant would be the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. The design was inspired by a drop of oil This is oil country, after all!

That is genuinely ugly. They definitely need a new arena, but I'd be shocked if the final form looked like that.
I haven't come across any yet.

I just love this design. This is 10 times nicer than any arena in the world with the possible exception of the Sprint Center in Kansas City. It makes everything else on this continent look like a piece of crap. I'm just salivating over these renderings. About time we got something nice.

Alberta is very wealthy. They can afford the best money can buy. They're not going to build something ordinary like Staples Center or General Motors Place.

Ugly? You're crazy. Apart for Sprint Center, this is the first nice arena design I've ever seen proposed in north America. The standard arena on this continent looks like a giant Best Buy big box store.
Mainly stainless steel cladding on the exterior?
Looks sweet. That sky walkway will be great

I'm not sure at this point, but I'm hoping for something like that.

Covered in mercury! Sooooooo awesome! This could end up being my favourite project on the planet. :master:

I agree with you about the 'Best Buy' anology, but there is more than one type of ugly. This is Frank Gehry ugly. But instead of someone spilling a bag of tortilla chips (like the Disney Concert Hall in LA) this is someone spilling a quart of oil. Why can't we get more arenas like Oracle in Oakland or Memorial Coliseum in Portland?
The interior looks like a hybrid of MSG's current renovation and the Air Canada Centre.

Because the design of the Oracle is out of style by now and has been used many times before?

My personal opinion, I wish Edmonton the best of luck in getting this approved, looks smexy as hell. Would have begun sooner if Harper hadn't killed Edmonton's Expo 2017 bid |:C

Same here, 'cause that would mean the exterior cladding materials would match the high standard of the BOK Center.

I COMPLETELY disagree. This building looks great and I can only hope they don't V/E the hell out of it.
