Elgeyo County to Benefit From Sh24 Billion for Arror Power Project

The Arror Hydro-Power Project in Elgeyo Marakwet county will cost Sh24 billion to implement.

The Exim Bank of India will provide a soft loan to the government for the project, whose planning is already underway.

It will be implemented by the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) for the government.

India's High Commissioner Yageshwar Varma visited the site of the project and met with officials from KVDA to discuss the implementation.

"We are working on the finer details and our experts have already received a report on the project which they are assessing before we sign the contract for the project," Varma said in Eldoret town on Saturday.

Iten Town Planning to Cost Sh36 Million

All Africa

The planning of Iten town is underway. Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos said the process will cost Sh36 million. He said for many years, Iten town has not had the image of a town.

"Whenever a visitor sets foot in Iten town, they do not understand whether they are in town or in a small shopping centre due to improper planning," said Tolgos. Iten town will be modernised to look neat for the next 50 years, said Tolgos. He said his vision is to make Iten town an urban town with big hotels.

Elgeyo Marakwet county will carry out fresh physical planning of Iten town, its headquarters, with a view to wooing investors in housing and hospitality sectors.

The town’s population is increasing rapidly, creating a housing crisis that has forced Governor Alex Tolgos and his staff to commute from the neighbouring Uasin Gishu county.

Elgeyo Marakwet has announced plans for a Sh1billion cable car in a bid to attract tourists.

The county will take advantage of escarpments in the area to construct the cableways that will see tourists taken from the valleys into the Rimoi National Reserve.

Governor Alex Tolgos Tuesday said this would be a major boost to tourism in the area.

“Countries such as South Africa, which have escarpments, are reaping big from such ventures and we want to take the same route and become the first county to have cable cars in Kenya,” said Mr Tolgos.

Other countries with cable cars are Brazil with her scenic Sugarloaf Mountain and Switzerland’s legendary Grindelwald-Männlichen cableways.
Major boost

MAJOR BOOST

Mr Tolgos said his government would also renovate the iconic Kamariny Stadium in Iten. Refurbishment of the stadium opened by Queen Elizabeth in the 1980s would be a major boost for athletics and local tourism.

“Athletics is a tourist attraction and Iten being the destination for the world’s top runners, we are likely to attract tourists who may want to come and watch them train,” Mr Tolgos said. “A master plan for the revival of the stadium will be ready soon.”

We will also build a museum that will preserve our rich athletics history that will also serve as tourists attraction. Plans are also underway to erect a monument in honour of athletes who have brought glory to Kenya,” he added.

The county has also completed marking tourist sites and plans.

Besides athletics, the county is also well-known for para-gliding and cycling.

^^LOL! Mt Kenya where? The great mountain does not present a nice spot for the same as Kerio Valley, it is too "flat". This would be an interesting investment though.

I think the capital of Elgeyo Marakwet is ITEN. Edit out the first post.

It would start somewhere on the Abedares then slowly rise up the mountain to about 12-14,000 feet. Then the people would either make it up to the top of the peak. Or relax in a mountain top ski resort. Which will come with snow thanks to some snow making equipment which will help rebuild the snow cap on top of the Mountain.

True it is ITEN Wikipedia needs updaing..

^^That would be more than 100km! Is such a cable feasible? The problem with Mt Kenya is its extent. The Mt is too "flattish". I climbed it once, and stayed in Nanyuki. That thing extends from Embu to Timau in diameter. This is unlike Mt Kilimanjaro which seems to have a narrower base and rises sharply.

Abedares side was just my projection.

But if the cable car started somewhere the mountain would get sloppy then it would work. The reason would be for a quick ski down one of the high slopes up in the mountain.

Cable cars Elgeyo plan underway

The Star | 16th April 2015

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has said the plan to put up cable cars along the Kerio Valley escarpment at a cost of Sh1.4 billion is underway.

The cable cars will be used to move tourists from one escarpment to the other.

Tolgos discussed the plan with Tourism Cabinet Secretary Phillis Kandie, who visited the county last week.

He said the national government will carry out feasibility studies on the project.

“We will work with the national government as we woo investors,” Tolgos said during a field day for farmers in Kerio Valley on Monday.

The county is in the process of rebranding and restocking the Rimoi National Game Reserve.

Nothing. Actually the governor wants the county to be dissolved as it is so small to make sense.matter of fact it barely pays its salaries let alone development.

The governor should just resign if he can’t figure out how to grow revenues in his county.

For starters Elgeyo-Marakwet is such a rich county it being the home of athletics. He should properly market it globally when our athletes run all over the globe. That would earn serious tourist dollars.

Him together with athletes who win big races should form a development fund which would be an investment vehicle to setup industries in the county. Like a big butchery, milk processing plant, more farms growing fruits and avocados, and light manufacturing like making of sports shoes, shirts pants etc.
