also known as the ship of the fens... one of my favourite buildings anywhere in the world. the octagon is a unique gothic dome, the only structure of its sort anywhere in the world.
This is also one of my favourite British cathedrals; wonderful late Romanesque design, facade, the 14thC gothic dome which predates the classical renaissance domes of 15thc Italian churches onwards, not to mention the Lady Chapel. The light quality inside the cathedral is also very fine.
Funny because I was googling this today! I recall this was referenced in Philippa Pearce's kid's novel Tom's Midnight Garden. There was also a 1999 movie which I always adored based on the book, but does anybody know if the actual Ely Cathedral is in it? I don't remember, but I think it may have been another cathedral they filmed in.
