Interesting comments. The original Xinhua report is quite controversial, what do you think about that?

"In the past 20 years China has made great achievements in sports, but people's health is obviously deteriorating. We always get the most gold medals, and definitely China is No.1 in Asia. Isn't it an irony and a shame?"

Yang Ming, a reporter with the Xinhua News Agency,

suggesting that equating sports with gold medals has distorted the spirit and nature of sports in China, quoted by Beijing Youth Daily Monday.

The reporter has a point. The fascination with spectator sports is irrational. What should be a diversion has become an obsession and a fantasy to many spectators. Ideally people would aim to better their health, and not pay attention to the sporting accomplishments to their favored athlete/team/nation.

The same goes toward governmental (or in the case of market democracies, corporate) funding of elite level athletes. It would make more sense to focus on public health.

Fairly speaking, attributing the deterioration in the public health only to warped cognition on international sport games is not fair. The air pollution, stained water, poisonous foods do cause a wayyyy greater deal of harm to the peoples health... However, as particlez said above, the govt should focus more on public heath instead of the top postion on medal tally... the govt is supposed to try its best to hammer out what the hell can truly make their shitizen proud. Is the answer really hard for some of political elites?

I just found an interesting picture when I was at the recent shelling incident that happened near us... look at the upper right corner of the pic below

What in your sight? A football field, a very decent football field in the small village on Yeonpyeong island near the border between North Korea and South Korea! No wonder Korean men's national football team can beat the Chinese rival many times over the last 30 years...

Thinking of the spectacular government buildings in villages all over China, I just feel shame on some that's lost to all sense of shame

i think its also because people are getting wealthier and unfortunately, turning to more of the damaging fast food franchises ie Mcdonalds etc. Its more got to do with the diet i think.
