This thread is about exceptional bridges or tunnels, megabridges or what have you. There is no hard definition what would be exceptional, but the bridge or tunnel should be one of these:

  • Longest, tallest, widest, deepest, either in the world or of its kind
  • First of its kind, or first use of a new technique
  • Most expensive, difficult or with highest traffic volume
  • Notable international bridges or tunnels, especially across water or difficult terrain
  • Particularly spectacular for other reasons
Any mode of transport is eligible, road, rail, waterway, even pedestrian. The bridge or tunnel can be for persons or cargo. Even exceptional aqueducts or similar could be OK, but pipelines would be stretching it. A complex of bridges/tunnels that in total is exceptional is eligible too.

Existing, u/c, or proposed structures are all accepted.

If the bridge or tunnel has its own thread there should be a link.

Let's start with the world's longest sea bridge, outside Qingdao, Shandong province (north of Shanghai).

This is just a proposal (or set of proposals) that came closer to reality a couple weeks back when it got political backing by the Norwegian government, a bridge and/or tunnel to cross the Sognefjord.

In length this is not crossing is not exceptionally big, but because the fjord is so deep, up to 1300 meter down to the sea bottom, a bridge would have the world's largest span or float on pontoons, while a tunnel would have to be a floating tunnel, this is way too deep for a conventional tunnel. This video is from the thread for this project.

This is a massive project for a rather small amount of traffic, but some of these techniques could come useful for other sea crossings across the world.

Bridge General Rafael Urdaneta - Maracaibo. Venezuela

It is the largest in the world built with prestressed concrete, and number 52 in the world.
