Petroleum exploration started early in the century and was marked by four major periods.
1900-1928 : This period was marked by petroleum exploration in the Rharb basin around oil seeps. This led to the discovery of the Ain Hamra oil pool in 1923.
1928-1958 : The seismic reflection technique was first introduced in evaluating the Rharb and the Prerif basins in 1935. It is not until 1955 that this tool was used to explore the Essaouira, Souss and Guercif basins. Oil and Gas discoveries were made in the Prerif Ridges and in the Sidi Fili trend. The cumulative production during this period reached 1.6 million barrels of oil.
1958-1981 : The hydrocarbon Law was promulgated and attracted international investments. The exploration was extended to most of the basins in Morocco. 176 wells were drilled in this period which led to the discovery of commercial oil and gas accumulations in the Essaouira and Rharb basins. By the end of 1981, cumulative production was 12.6 million barrels of
oil and 35 BCF of gas.
1981-present : ONAREP was created by the Moroccan government in 1981. With a mandate to explore Morocco by its own means and jointly with foreign petroleum companies. This phase was marked by drilling 66 wells, 36 of which were undertaken jointly with international companies. This activity led to the discovery of gas/condensate field in Meskala (Essaouira) and of several biogenic gas accumulations in the Rharb Basin.

Since its creation in 1981, ONAREP has given priority to basin evaluation and hydrocarbon potential assessment of Moroccan sedimentary basins. These studies resulted in the generation of a number of prospects which have been presented accordingly throughout a variety of promotional campaigns to the industry.
Furthermore, ONAREP has always managed to be represented in most important petroleum international events. These efforts permitted to the industry representatives to gain a better understanding on the HC potential of our sedimentary basins.
Results of these sustainable efforts were concretized, since 1996, by the signature with partners of 3 petroleum agreements covering 5 exploration permits (onshore) and one exploitation concession and 10 reconnaissance contracts (see map).
