It is a bit strange, especially when there's still a parallel access route and cyclists are banned. Looks a bit like a showroom for different traffic calming features, the way they've all just been thrown in there at some point.

Presumably they are trying very hard to discourage traffic from using it for whatever reason, but it still looks quite busy.

A new bypass road was opened to relieve traffic from this road that passed the city center of Ommen very closely and that also had many intersections with local roads. The new road has a faster max. speed and it doesn't have intersections.

Here's a video of the bypass route uploaded by the same guy.

It's also very common in the Netherlands to have these extreme downgrades when a new replacement road has opened. Just to prevent taking the old route as a short cut and to make it more safe. These 80 km/h roads are the most dangerous in the country, especially roads like the one that has been downgraded. With the by-pass is has become just a local road. Therefor all these measures were taken to lower the speed, as a simple sign that says max speed 50 km/h instead of the old 80 km/h doesn't work in the Netherlands. Making it much safer for the slower traffic crossing the street at all the crossroads.

Any comments guys? People who planned and built that should be taken directly to the court...
I used to take that route for at least four times a week from Zwolle to Emmen, but i don't recognize it anymore with all those curves and speed bumps. It is a real downgrade, but that doesn't really matter because there is a new road just a few kilometers ahead. It seems to be a lot safer now.

Why isn't it possible to pass other cars on this new road? Pretty strange, as there are no trees, building and so on.

Because they don't want you to take this road if you want to drive from Emmen to Zwolle. It is only for local people now. You should take the new road. ;)

You might wanna yield to those cyclists coming from the right at 0:32.

That's probably why they downgraded this road: to keep blind people like you from making it too dangerous.

Not making fun of the blind, but since you didn't see those bicyclists, or managed to find the brand new replacement road, i'm just assuming this is the condition that has befallen you.

I don't see anything wrong with the downgrade, the old road was indeed very unsafe. The bypass is a pleasure to drive I must say.

Good job! :applause:

By the way, the cyclists had priority in this case because they were coming from the right. The guy who has taken this video should have stopped for them.

I meant the new road, why it's not possible to overtake other cars?

^^ Because it's an expressway on which you are allowed to drive 100 km/h, so it's not too safe to allow vehicles to overtake. Besides, you can only drive on the road if your vehicle is able to drive at least 50 km/h, so there shouldn't be slow traffic on the road.

^^ The main reason is to prevent head on collisions. It also makes it possible to have a maximum speed of 100 km/h instead of the standard 80 km/h on these kind of roads.

Strange country. Why don't you ban all cars, nobody would die :bash:
Did you read ANY of the replies to your post? A replacement road was constructed, which was safer and better. Now the old road is used as a local road.

So the OVERALL situation has IMPROVED for cars.

What a silly and even stupid reaction. If it comes to traffic and safety on the road, I wish my country would be so civilised as The Netherlands!
