Starting this so I have somewhere to post my take on the 2023 Lighthouse idea.

Post any and all wacky ideas, towers from other cities, 10,000m skyscrapers that you want to see in Leeds!

Leeds 2023 Lighthouse

EDIT: Sorry about the image sizes!

I decided to have a go at creating my own version of what the lighthouse should look like. I think a true-to-life imitation would look disappointing and potentially tacky...we should be aiming higher! This is around 25m wide and 100m tall, and should be visible from all across the city. It wouldn't be made in coloured panels, rather steel beams with LED panels showing these red and white colours racing up the structure to the top. What do you all think?

Before we get carried away with uncosted designs , it is essential we know what this mystery local business is budgeting to spend on funding the building of a lighthouse. One things for certain, LCC will not be getting a blank cheque.

Of course, that’s why i’ve titled it ‘fantasy’ buildings. If it was just a steel lattice with no viewing platform, I doubt the cost would be sky-high. Yeah, it’s a shame they can’t say who this business is.

Ha ha, I think this is a brilliant idea. I've seen some clever forumers putting renders together which makes me think they must work in planning or architects' practices.

The only drawback for me is that I have neither the artistic skill nor the imagination to produce any ideas which will make your jaws drop at my verve and brilliance. So, all I can do is applaud what you clever folks come up with.

Thank you very much! I work in planning but have no background in 3D drawing... I just use the free version of SketchUp and Google Earth and mess around until something works!
think it looks stunning...send to LCC to show them what's needed to make a statement, rather than what I fear to be a 20 metre high lighthouse like you see at Brid or Scarborough!
Nice shape, but a thinner version would appeal to me. Can't be red and white though. Where's the light?
depending on where it's situated, i'd like something around the height of Leeds Town Hall about 150-200 ft tall, thin and constructed mostly of glass and metal framed ( similar to the Armouries Hall of Steel) and at the top a viewing platform accessible to the public in all weathers. For a small fee, of course that would pay towards the incredible Light shows that we'll be promised. It would be ridiculous imo to replicate the Eddystone Lighthouse (as on that old render) btw wasn't it John Smeaton who engineered and improved the Aire & Calder Navigation ? you'd have thought that the fact it had a huge impact on Leeds' history was also worthy of recognition.?

alternative south bank

In the spirit of this thread's title, these images are just for fun, imagining a different way of developing the area south of the Aire. Mostly as a result of thinking about how big an impact a four storey (equivalent) rail viaduct and station would have, crashing through and dividing Holbeck urban village and the proposed south bank. Also, still bewildered as to why it's seen as ok to build a terminus HS2 without the possibility of making through connections to Manchester etc.

I know these things have already been decided, but fantasy, right?

Hi, if you post these as regular hyperlinks we can just visit them to see the images; otherwise, you need to upload them to Imgur and then copy the embed link from there. It seems to be the only way to get images onto the forums from my understanding.

Also, just had a look myself; the major problem would be the disruption along the existing viaduct. There's no capacity to incorporate HS2 trains on existing rail so the viaduct would have to be widened, causing massive disruption to the existing built environment; at least with the T - junction style station we're getting, there's not much impact as the buildings it will destroy are mostly of low value in most respects.

LOVE the idea for Crown Point Square with the tower, by the way!

any direct link (ending in .jpg, .gif,) can be embedded by clicking the photo icon when writing a post

but obviously best practice to upload them to a dedicated image host so you're not rinsing some poor company's bandwidth.
Thanks everyone for help, it's all a bit tricky for this dummy! I've followed the instructions on FAqs and other threads, got an imgur account, not happening.

BLOK

On a grey and miserable day off I've had a go at a cluster of towers at the north of the city. The design of the towers comes from 432 Park Avenue in New York - a completely square base, very narrow, with grid-like design elements. The towers would be constructed of precast concrete like Hume House, with the red strips made potentially from cor-ten steel like Broadcasting Place. The design also take inspiration from the strip of red running down the side of Opal tower, and the vertical and window design of Sky Plaza, Hume House and Fairfax House.

They are all set on a gridded plot equidistant from each other (7m - too close for residential but I didn't think of that until i'd finished and couldn't be bothered changing it ) but would probably form student flats, around 1100 in total given the small footprint of each tower.

Tallest is 128m or around 39 storeys.

I've always wished for a US downtown style cluster for Leeds, accentuated by the hill there. They wouldn't even have to be that big, something like 170m would make a great pinnacle.

yeah and if you add the bridge st towers its gonna be a reet skyscraper city view from New York road. I'm old enough to remember when the tower blocks of Little London dominated that area pre - opal etc.:)
btw I don't like that 'meadows' concept at all, Hunslet and Holbeck were industrial powerhouses built by innovators and entrepeneurs not related to farming/rural idylls.
Wow, love the heights of those buildings. I think we could do with a glass tower somewhere, but your ideas are amazing too.
