27th FIBA Asia Championship moved to Philippines; 2013 calendar finalized

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The FIBA Asia Executive Committee has decided to move the 27th FIBA Asia Championship from Beirut (Lebanon) to Manila (Philippines) in view of the current situation in Lebanon and rest of West Asia. The event will be played as per the original dates of Aug 1-11, 2013.

Unfortunately, the current situation in the region and the on-going civil war in Syria, which has its indirect effect on the countries in the whole of West Asia, especially on Lebanon, creates doubts about the stability that we might not have, at least, till the fixed dates of our event, said FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian explaining the decision.

In view of these facts, FIBA Asia Executive Committee decided to change the venue of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship from Beirut-Lebanon to Manila-Philippines, Khajirian said.

The 27th FIBA Asia Championship will also act as the qualifying event or the 2014 FIBA World Cup to be played in Spain. The top three teams from the 27th FIBA Asia Championship will earn the right to represent FIBA Asia at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Samahang Basketbol NG Pilipinas (SBP), the National Federation of the Philippines had been one of the bidders who made their presentation at the FIBA Asia Executive Committee meeting in September 2012, where it was initially decided to award the hosting rights to Lebanon.

SBP was still interested in hosting the championship and welcomed the decision of moving it to Manila, Khajirian said.

Philippines last hosted the marquee event for Asian basketball when Manila hosted the 7th edition of the event in 1973.

We are honored to host this prestigious event, said SBP Executive Director Renauld Sonny Barrios.

We thank FIBA Asia, in particular Secretary General Hagop Khajirian, for giving us this privilege, which will give great happiness and enjoyment to the millions of Filipino basket ball fans, he added.

2013 Calendar finalized

Further, the finalized FIBA Asia calendar of events for 2013 has also been announced.

· 27th FIBA Asia Championship: Manila, Philippines. Aug 1-11.
· 24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup: Amman, Jordan. Sept 13-21.
· 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship: Tehran, Iran. Sept 25-Oct 4.
· 25th FIBA Asia Championship for Women: Bangkok, Thailand. Oct 27-Nov 3.
· 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Women: Colombo, Sri Lanka. Nov 18-25

The Philippines won the rights to host the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship set on August 1 to 13.

No less than Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan made the announcement in a text message circulated Thursday evening.

FIBA Asia had earlier awarded hosting rights to the event to Lebanon, but tensions in the region forced the regional cage body to look for other options.

Last September, Pangilinan led a delegation of SBP officials to make a comprehensive presentation before the FIBA Asia board in Japan to convince the Philippines’ fitness to host the tournament. The cage body, however, decided to go with Lebanon, but noted the Philippines would be next in line should the original choice prove to be unfit.

The FIBA Asia Championship serves as qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team coached by Chot Reyes will represent the country in the competition.

MVP said the Philippines will be hosting the 27th Fiba Asia Men’s Championship which we last hosted 4 decades ago in 1973. We also won the championship that year, with the team led by Sonny Jaworski, Bogs Adornado, Mon Fernandez, Freddie Webb and coached by the late Tito Eduque.
At that time, the competition was called Asian Basketball Confederation.

PHI - Excitement for new hosts

MANILA (FIBA Asia Championship) - Basketball fans in the Philippines are buzzing following the announcement that the country is to host the FIBA Asia Championship for the first time in 40 years.

Basketball's governing body in Asia decided to move the event from Lebanon because of "doubts about the stability that we might not have" due to the current situation in the region and the on-going civil war in nearby Syria.

The FIBA Asia Championship, which will serve as a qualifying event for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, is to tip off on the first of August and conclude on the 11th.

The coach of the Philippines national team, Chot Reyes, commented on the switch on Twitter.

He tweeted: “It’s official: Manila hosts 2013 FIBA Asia Championship! All d hardwork thru Xmas & New Year paid off. Now d really difficult work begins.”

SBP buckles down to work for coming FIBA-Asia tilt

WITH just six months left before the FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will start working feverishly to prepare for the staging of the biggest cage tournament in the country in the last 35 years, according to SBP executive director Sonny Barrios.

“Among the priorities is to identify the people who will head the different working groups,” said Barrios, who was formally informed by FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian last week the event, originally set to be held in Lebanon on Aug. 1-11, was being shifted to the Philippines.

The announcement of the venue transfer was posted on the FIBA-Asia website late Thursday.

PROOF that the hosts' campaign in the FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship is for national cause and above personal and marketing considerations, the Philippine cage team has dropped top corporate backer Smart Communications' name and henceforth is going to be simply known as Gilas Pilipinas.

No less than Smart Communications and PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan made the disclosure to Spin.ph on Sunday to drive home his call for unity among basketball stakeholders, team owners, and fans as a way of lending support to the national team in this worthy endeavor.

Pangilinan, the chief backer of Gilas Pilipinas in his capacity as president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), said that for the August 1-11 international cage meet, the official jersey of the team will only bear the word `Pilipinas’ in front.

The presence of the 'Smart' name in the national team has become a contentious issue both among owners and fans at a time when the SBP and the PBA are trying to get the pro teams' commitment to lend their players to Gilas for the event serving as the Asian qualifier for the 2014 world championships in Spain.

“Yung uniform naman ng Philippine team in the tournament ang nakalagay lang dun`Pilipinas’ at `yung pangalan ng players sa likod,” explained Pangilinan. “Walang Smart na nakalagay dun. So others won’t have to worry about it.”

PBA media bureau chief Willy Marcial confirmed that an understanding with SBP and the MVP Group had already been reached by the league regarding the sensitive matter.

“Yes, nagkaka-intindihan na kami sa SBP at ng MVP group na yun na nga muna ang name… Gilas Pilipinas,” said the ever-accommodating Marcial.

Pangilinan added that he welcomes other companies which are planning to sponsor the team in future tournaments.

“If they want to sponsor certain events or even the Fiba-Asia, we are open,” said Pangilinan. “If they want to participate (and help out in the sponsorship), open kami. It helps reduce the burden on us.”

The SBP chief and team owner of Talk `N Text was quick to write off suggestions from other fellow team owners such as Rain or Shine bosses Raymund Yu and Terry Que to put a small logo of teams which the nationals players are representing in the PBA, in their Gilas jerseys.

“That’s a good idea, but Fiba won’t allow that. Just the name of the country, number, and the name of the player,” said Pangilinan, pointing to strict Fiba regulations on sponsorships.
