FIU pedestrian bridge collapses, people trapped underneath

Heads will roll for this, after the MDC garage collapse and now this!

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/west-miami-dade/article205316174.html

The FIU pedestrian bridge across Southwest Eighth Street collapsed Thursday afternoon, trapping an unknown number of people and cars underneath.

The bridge was installed at Southwest 109th Avenue Saturday morning, intended eventually to provide pedestrian access across Tamiami Trail from FIU’s main campus to Sweetwater, where thousands of students live in off-campus housing or in FIU’s newer dorms.

Before Saturday’s installation, FIU said the method of overall installation significantly reduced the risk to workers, walkers, drivers and minimized traffic disruptions for construction.

Channel 7 is saying several dead, many injured, cars trapped underneath.
My first reaction was ... bridge, what bridge? Sure enough there is... WAS... a new ped bridge for the students. Wow, 5 days after being put up... clearly someone didn't brace this properly.
I'm sure the cheaper ABC thing passed their money-friendly CBA, but maybe this and the MDC prefab thing as well as the school thing can
help expose FL as a backwards and conservative wasteland.
^^Except it received federal funding from Obama's TIGER V program as early as 2013, which likely set conditions over who is awarded contracts. Knowing Democrats and their knack for pay-to-play corruption, combined with Miami's own favoritism, this is no surprise.

The media and useful idiots are so desperate to connect this to President Trump via Paul Manafort, as their Russia conspiracy is on life support.

This tragedy isn't political but some have made it so already & even racist.

It seems the bridge broke and collapsed right on the spot where some workers and a crane where doing something.
This video shows the exact moment the bridge fell.
Look at the top left where the crane and workers are on the roof of the bridge, its the spot that breaks first.

Yeah it's really sad people are already trying to tun this into a "it's this president's fault" or "its that political party's fault". More than likely it was the fault of some construction practice or procedure that is so far removed from any politician.

I'm starting to believe that the construction company (which very quickly moved the black crane from the scene, even before the police arrived moments later while doing nothing about the green man lift that was right beside it) did so for a reason that had little/nothing to do with safety.

So will they be rebuilding this bridge, after all this investigation or is it too soon to say?

Well I didn't start it. I simply refuted Miami High Rise's absurd desire that it will "help expose FL as a backwards and conservative wasteland." Politicize much?

Why make this political? And why single out the democratic party in such a way that portrays them as the cause, then defend the flip side of that by blaming the media or anti-Trump politics? You do see how arrogant this post was don't you?

This comes down to an engineering failure from the start, that thing had no center support, and for a cable stayed or suspension platform that's really not safe. Nearly every other cable stayed bridge has a center support column beneath, or it would have a tall mast like support above. Here, we see neither. The road beneath would have to lose a lane if they did that, and whatever their alternative, the solution failed.

My condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the cars that got crushed below, and hope their mourning is short lived, and their grief does not wallow.....we as Americans all need to start working together to make this place safer, regardless of what we have to give up and what we have to sacrifice from our own wants and desires, so that others can feel safe in public and live just that way.... Only our own selfish pride gets in the way of progress.

16 mins of engineering nerdiness (and a Canadian guy who changes words around weirdly).

AVE!!!

I love AVE's videos he is one of the best machinists and tool diagnostics experts on Youtube. His antics are very humorous too especially his own invented Canadian dialect.

If you are a construction worker or remodeling expert his videos on drills are great. He takes apart the common top brands, (i.e, Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, etc) and shows the good and bad in today's design, showing how companies like Milwaukee are essentially the same as Ryobi and Ridgid (all made by "TTI") whereas Dewalt is now American made again, and Makita has it's own production plants in Japan and China.
