'Rain bomb' causes flooding in parts of northern Taiwan

Taipei, June 2 (CNA) Parts of the northern city of New Taipei were flooded Friday as a hovering front and southwesterly airstream dumped heavy rain across Taiwan.

As of 8:30 a.m. Friday, flooding had been reported in 43 locations in the city's Danshui, Sanzhi, Shimen, Jinshan and Wanli districts, the city government said.

Some schools in Shimen, Jinshan, Wanli and Sanzhi districts have also been closed, it said.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) warned Friday that the moist weather system will bring downpours all over Taiwan, with torrential rain or extremely torrential rain likely on the northern coast.

Torrential rain is defined as accumulated rainfall of 350 mm or more within 24 hours, while extremely torrential rain means accumulated rainfall of 500 mm or more over a 24-hour period.

As of 8:10 a.m. Friday, the accumulated precipitation in districts of New Taipei was 444 mm in Shimen, 428 mm in Sanzhi, 372 mm in Jinshan and 281 mm in Wanli, according to CWB data.

Also on Friday, the Water Resources Agency (WRA) said that in addition to the New Taipei areas that had already flooded, parts of Keelung, namely Zhongshan, Jenai and Xinyi districts, were on a Level 1 food alert.

Zhongzheng, Anle and Nuannuan districts in Keelung, meanwhile, were on a Level 2 flood alert, the agency said.

A Level 1 alert means flooding is imminent if rain continues, while a Level 2 alert means that flooding is possible within three hours if rain continues.

Nuclear reactor trips as electric pylon falls during rain

Source: http://focustaiwan.tw/news/asoc/201706020012.aspx

2017/06/02 14:21:40

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) A reactor at the No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant in New Taipei tripped out on Friday, after a power transmission pylon on a nearby hilltop toppled during torrential rain, Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) said.

The second nuclear reactor at the power plant automatically shut down as its safety mechanism was activated, the state-run company said, adding that neither the reactor nor the generator was damaged.

The reactor was running at 75 percent capacity when the incident occurred and had been scheduled to remain at that level until June 10 or 11, when the fuel is due to run out, Taipower said.

At that time, the reactor would be shut down for annual maintenance, the company said.

With the reactor now down, only one of six reactors at Taiwan's three functional nuclear power plants is in operation, according to Taipower.

Since early Friday, hundreds of millimeters of rain has fallen in New Taipei and Keelung as a weather front and southwesterly airstream moved over Taiwan from the north, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - At least one motorcyclist was reported injured in Taipei City as torrential rain overwhelmed the streets and caused flooding across the capital Saturday evening.

The government texted messages to residents’ smartphones to warn them of the coming onslaught, but even then many were caught outside.

In Ximending, one of Taipei’s most popular destinations for locals and tourists alike on weekends, water suddenly shot several floors high, throwing a motorcyclist off his vehicle, the Central News Agency reported.

On the other side of town, close to the fashionable Xinyi shopping district, Keelung Road had “turned into the Keelung River,” a resident noted online. Traffic on Zhongxiao East Road section 4, known for its concentration of department stores and boutiques, was stuck

There were reports of floods from 161 locations in the capital, but also from the surrounding New Taipei City area and from Keelung City on the north coast.

A total of 13 districts in Taipei and New Taipei were declared in danger of serious and immediate flooding, reports said. Residents had called in news about flooding from a wide range of major streets, including Keelung Road section 3, Xinyi Road section 2, Songjiang Road and Tianmu East Road. On Lianyun Street, water stood 30 cm high, while at Dongmen Mass Rapid Transit Station, water had to be pumped out onto the street. Otherwise, MRT services proceeded normally, reports said.

On a wider scale, neighboring Keelung but also Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County in the far south were warned about the likelihood of torrential rain, CNA reported.
