Hi,

I thought it was about time to represent the beautiful island funen, with it's own thread - I hope you think the same, that it could be a good idea.
As a native fynbo, and with relatives and good friends there, I still go there, even it's 20 years since I left the island.

The maincity Odense, has always been one of the reason why citydevelopment and cityplanning has my interest, because of the terrible dividing of the city.
In the sixties where the local politiciens decided to be one the first hardliners to show the world how to deal with new times= increasing traffic, and started the demolishing of the inner city to replace with the 4 tracks Thomas B. Thrigesgade which is "motorway" surrounded by parkingplaces and open spaces cutting like a knife through the city, and the old fine quarters were destroyed.
Odense is still suffering of this, and the politiciens have tried to solve this for many years now.
It seems that something interesting will change in Thomas B. Thrigesgade in the coming future with the oconomical support from Realdania, and many bigger projects is now on the drawing board e.g the new Odense University hospital ,
and I will try to locate some of this, hopefully with your help.

Hafnia :)

If Fyn is third largest island in Denmark, what is the first and second?
Sealand and North jutland
Sealand and North jutland
Is North Jutland officially considdered an island? Seems to be differernt from source to soruce.

Sorry for hijacking the thread with this, Fyn should surely be large enough for a thread of it's own. :)
I'm looking forward to see some projects from this part of our country, and I agree with mlm on the thread-matter.

Regarding the island-issue I have learned something new today. I have to conclude personally, that Northern Jutland actually is an island.

No problem :)

I guess this make sense, we can learn from this thread, learn some about Fyn, as my knowledge to Herning and Esbjerg never has been better..
I've actually been involved in a magazin with some articles about Odense, maybe someone will find them interesting. The magazin is made for a developer called Olav de Linde who has lots of buildings in Odense (and Århus).

The latest issue can be read here, on page 5-8 there's an article about the past, present and future of Odense: OdL Magasinet September 2010

Here's another one where we met the (former) mayor of Odense Jan Boye: OdL Magasinet June 2009

More Odense stuff can be found in other issues, they can be seen in the Magazin archive.

Good idea with this Funen thread, we hear way to little from Odense and Funen in this forum.

Hafnia your numbers on the size of Odense is not fully correct, the city has 166.305 (2010) and the municipality 188.777 (2010). Some people in Ålborg claim they are number three, but the Ålborg figures are the city 123.432 (2010) but they are actually third, when it comes to municipality 197.426 (2010).

Thomas B. Thrigesgade from above,
to the right the small houses is the HC Andersen quarter, and the blue building is the museum, and behind there is a big parking area and a traffic tunnel, and to the left they have tried to make a peripher settlement with parking in front, which is an impossible idea.
This looks maybe not so bad from this perpective, but believe me it's not nice

As you can see on this map, this is a big part of the inner city, and thanks to Realdania a new development, new urban spaces will arise

Great initiative, any plans to upload some pictures of the best recent projects to the first post Hafnia? :

Can't say I can think of any other than the Niddelfart Savings Bank and the Culture Island in the same town right now - but that just shows how much of a need there is for this thread.:)
^^
Thank you all for the kind words :)

@ Ramblersen, Yes I will try to find something interesting that can give the thread some life, but because of my physical absence to Fyn, it has to be something uploaded, even I would like to take some photos myself from differents sites overthere.

The two projects mentioned in year post, are also what I remember have seen in this forum.

^^ Actually the article on fyens.dk says the apartments in the 3rd building will be ready after 2011. ;)

They already started building the foundation a long time ago, but it was later left unfinished. When I passed by last time (june or july) there was no sign of any work going on, but we can of course croos out fingers and hope.

You're right, and sure that Sjælsøe have a deeply interest to tell us all that the project will continue, otherwise they will never sell the 2 first blochs.
But i'm convinced they mean it with number 3, that's why they bought the whole thing.
There is potential in this area.

And now we go heavy-weight:
The second biggest hospital in Denmark(after Rigshospitalet) moving in the coming years next to the university of Odense at Campusvej in south east of the town.
250,000 sqm, and a new sciencepark also coming up, this will be really really big, so big that we'll probably talk a little bit more about this. :)

Not quite true. The New University Hospital in Aarhus is going to be bigger. It will integrate the existing Skejby hospital and have a combined area of approx. 344.000 m2. Not that it matters really but let facts be facts.
