Ganca is one of the most ancient towns of Azerbaijan (founded in IV century B.C.).It is the second biggest city of Azerbaijan and the fourth largest city in Transcaucasus. The city is located on the Ganca river, south of the Kura River in a rich agricultural area. Ganja has for long been the main industrial centre of western Azerbaijan.
The city was the centre of the caucasian Albanian Christianity till the 11th century, when it fell to the Seljuk Turks. It was rebuilt in the 12th century after an earthquake in 1139 destroyed the original town that was founded in the 5th century, east of the modern city. For some time in 1918 Ganja was the provisional capital of a briefly independent Azerbaijan.
There are many ancient historical monuments: mosque of Albanians, Ganja Gates (X-XI c.), Palace "Dar-us-Soltan" (XII c.), towers, medrese, bath-house, Caravansaray, Imam-zade Complex (XVI c.), Djuma Mosque (1606). To the south of Ganja between the emerald alpine forests is hidden the azure lake Goy-Gol (Blue Lake). On slope of mountains surrounding the lake there are unique creations of nature: "Stone circus", "Chingil", mystical caves and grottos.
The Bottle House is situated in 15 Guseinli street in Ganca, the second biggest city of Azerbaijan. It is one of Ganca's more off-beat attractions. More impressive than its more famous relative in Rhyanon, Nevada, it's the work of Ibragim Jaffarov who used 48,000 glass bottles to decorate an existing two-storey home. Though the use of bottles was purely aesthetic, the pictures on the gables commem orate Ibragim's brother Yusif (the portrait that looks like Mao). Yusif never returned from WWII. He didn't die as the familv received a mysterious letter from him in 1957 but have received no word since.
Goy-Gol lake (the blue lake) is believed to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. It was formed in September, 1139 as a result of the strongest earthquake in Ganca. The earthquake took place at a approximately of 3000 m. The boulders of Kapaz mountain broke off the mountain and blocked the Agsu river and other inflows of Kurekchay river. As a result eight very beautiful lakes were formed. Goy-Gol lake is the largest of them. Today, this area is a national park.
