Former Windmill Hills School

I was passing today when I noticed that they had demolished most of the conservatory that was added when the building was a care home:

When rumours started about work starting in early December I contacted the Church of Scientology via their website and asked about their plans. I have just received a reply which might explain why it has taken over 10 years to do anything with the building (that and Gateshead MBC's enforcement order).

"Thank you for your e mail & concern regarding the property at Gateshead.
My apologies for this very late reply, the system has been inaccessible till now.
I totally agree it is a glorious property that had been neglected beyond belief & I am warmed that you feel so passionate as to its condition.
The Scientology field here in the area has done a lot of fundraising recently & this has allowed work to embark on the internal structures as well as the exterior.
The Designers & Architects plans are ready also for the next stage.
While we were preparing for these steps we had gone to clear the grounds & I was so uplifted by the people passing by as to their concern & then joy at the improvements being undertaken. what a great community there is there in Gateshead.
So I am relieved to tell you that things are seriously progressing.
I wonder if you would like to pitch in & help either in labour or financial donations? We need a boatful of both.
Kindest Regards & Best Wishes for 2018

I think I will skip the donation bit either labour or financial.

Gateshead's Old Town Hall to be transformed into major visitor attraction

On Chronicle Live website on 05/02/18

EXTRACT

The Old Town Hall Quarter was put up for sale last year by the council, which called for a visionary developer to take on the site

Old Town Hall in Gateshead (Image: Gateshead Council)

Gateshead historic Old Town Hall could soon be turned into a major visitor attraction after agreement was reached with developers from the North East.

A call out was made last March for a developer to regenerate the Old Town Hall Quarter, when the Grade-II listed town hall was put up for sale together with a patch of land surrounding the former heart of the town.

Now it has emerged that the Old Town Hall Quarter is on the verge of being sold to Dinosauria Ltd, an entertainment business which has had plans to create a top attraction in the North East for several years.

Gateshead Council agreed at its last cabinet meeting on January 23 to lease the site to Dinosauria Ltd on a 250-year lease as part of its strategy to sell off surplus assets, paving the way for the building to be turned into an attraction.

The plan is the driven forward by Newcastle wealth managers Tier One Capital, which held an event a few years ago in a bid to bring investors on board.

From the Planning Documents link to Design & Access Statement http://myserviceplanning.gateshead....j.pdf?DocNo=19546200&PageNo=1&content=obj.pdf that includes these extracts:-

The NewBridge Project recently moved out of its premises on New Bridge Street West, Newcastle upon Tyne, its home for 7years due to redevelopment of the area. It is now based in grade II listed building, Carliol House in Newcastle City Centre on a temporary lease.

AND

Gateshead Council have offered NBP the 1345m2 retail unit @232-240 High Street due to the lack of commercial interest and the increase in empty retail units in Gateshead town centre as many retail businesses have moved into premises in new retail development, Trinity Square.

NBP will occupy the unit on a 5year lease while the area awaits redevelopment to develop a Creative Hub to house and provide incubator, development, studio and practice space for up to 40 artists, graduates, creative business start up’s and other early stage creative ventures in the Gateshead and Newcastle area.

The Creative Hub will be also be outward facing and be driven by artist and community need; hosting a variety of spaces including meeting rooms, event space, gallery space, artist studios, creative practice space, creative business incubator & workshop space.

The building in question is the former Woolworth (recently Poundland) store just north of junction with Jackson St, Gateshead for use by The NewBridge Project c/o PopUp Initiative CIC
